Boost gauge questions

Broken Exhaust manifold bolts.

Right after I bought this truck I put a BHAF in. It has been about a year now and it still looks pretty good, you can see light thru the element from the inside or out and no real dark spots etc. and no outerwears thingy.

I just replaced the OEM intake tube with a Garage/Shop Engineered unit I made out of aluminum tubing. I never saw 1100*+ EGT's before, now I am seeing 1250 ish when I stand on the skinny pedal. Boost pressures increased from 18-20 to 25-27lbs. I have no real worries or complaints but that boost increase surprised me... and I had some oil come out the exhaust housing when the new intake tube popped off the turbo the first test run.

I would like to put a restriction gauge on that BHAF to see if it really is still good. I would appreciate any thoughts on this folks.

i hope yours does not look clean for the same reason mine did...

on mine the tube that clamps to the air filter did not fit tight at all. not even with the tee clamp bottomed out! who knows how many miles mine was driven that way> i wrapped the plastic snout part of air filter housing with duct tape until it was a snug fit.

don

Don I have the tubing pushed down into the BHAF a few inches, I had to carefully trim the inner lip of the filter to accomplish this. I just did not like how little of an area there is for clamping on either end really. Plus it eliminated a rubber connector there. So I have the BHAF, aluminum tube w/45* and a rubber 45* connector. It is a very tight fitment on the air filter end.

You made something like this, only w/a paper element as opposed to the aFe.

They are very popular. I would imagine in your particular case, you will only gain more noise from this set-up not incresed egt/boost.

If you had removed the OEM filter box you should see more boost perhaps and higher EGT perhaps due to pulling in heated air.

If none of this makes sense, don't worry. I can't understand what I wrote either.

I cannot understand why you have much higher EGT unless the engine heat is heating the aluminum pipe and heating the air????????? That's dumb too. I simply don't know.

Uhhh, I think I forgot to mention I put a turn or two on the fuel screw... And adjusted the smoke etc. That might have something to do with it(EGT's) Forgot about that one until I revisited that trucks notes after discovering the latest greatest Exterior Lubrication Event.

I have been trying so hard not to mess with this rig until I got a chance to get a baseline on it. I did put some gauges in and wanted to get a tach and then establish my baseline, still haven't got the tach in though. I have a different turbo for it, an exhaust too. Finally just got the screw driver out and turned it up some.

Scott, My set-up is very similar, I did nix the stock air box and went with the big open air cleaner, not a washable unit though. I have a slacker tendency and a cleanable air filter would at some point get neglected. Better safe than sorry on that one.

Now you tell me.............

:rolleyes: :-{}

Just when I thought I had everything figgured out, someone throws a wrench into the equation.

Thank's for telling me. I'm sure the guy who manufactures, markets and sells these pipes assemblies thanks you too

I would feel bad but I actually emailed him and gave him my two cents on the rubber 45* and 2. 5" to 3" reducer/expander for the early H1C's. So at least I contributed something...

Looks like you ordered the plainjane model from him ;)

LOL! This is what is used on the SCHOOL BUS :) I just order them from the bus dealership. Oo.

GL

I may add that the buses utalize the same engine, turbo, etc. so it wasn't like I designed the pipe assy.

His product is nice. I will throw in I had considerable time in finding a supplier of alum. tube and making sure I got the tube with enough length etc. (tangent length). And I was disappointed in the clamping marks on the tube from the mandrel bender. So if you have the dough, buy one from him...

Eventually, when my wife isn't paying attention, I'll polish it up and post a photo...

GL, at SOP didn't you have a diamond plate filter housing on that truck? It's kinda hard to remember, since I looked at 30 trucks that day! :-laf
