intermittent Wipers

I know this has been talked about before but here goes again. The wipers usually work on intermittent but will sometimes wipe 2 times, sometimes 3 or 4 or 5. Sometimes not at all. What is the most common reason for this. I sure don't want to take it to the dealer but don't know where else to go.

Mine has come down with the same problem two times, multi function switch both times. bg

Multi funtion switch... . is that the turn signal lever/wiper switch? Are they hard to replace?
