Is a Smarty Programmer good for a 1999 Dodge 24 Valve

I recently bought a 1999 Dodge Ram 2500 24 valve cummins and i asked one of my diesel buddys if a Smarty programmer was good for the Dodge. He told me that they are known on the the 24 valves to crack the headers. So with that i have not had it on my truck yet and I have seen videos on youtube of what could happen if you turned the Smarty all the way up. You can blow smoke like crazy. I am just scared that I might crack a header. Can someone please help me and tell me that if it is good for my truck or not.

The Smarty is NOT know to crack the exhaust manifold. But you need guages so you can see the EGT's. It is heat that causes cracking.



Yes the Smarty is a good tool because you can fine tune everything and check codes.



If you run more boost or fuel you need to get a boost elbow to run more boost. This keeps the wastegate closed longer.

It is best to limit boost with your stock turbo to around 35. It will last a long time and do a good job.

I doubt you can get that much boost with just the Smarty though.

alright thank you. and i do have gauges, 1 is the booster gauge and the other is the temperature gauge.

I have a Smarty and installed it on my 01 24V and ran it on setting 9 for about 100K miles with zero problems. I have since installed it on my 02 and so far no issues. The best I have ever hit for boost is 31 lbs, so I doubt you will be able to hit 35 or higher to cause any damage. Always keep an eye on the pyrometer.

You'll like the smarty... . you need to get a fuel pressure gauge on your truck.

Just be careful with the higher settings if you have a stock auto trans. I had a 2000 before my current truck and the transmission was stock the first 2 years I owned it and if I got into it on sw7 and on up it was just too much for the torque converter.
