Alright guys, I've been dreading opening up my timing case because I fear that this metal cylinder I hold in my hand is the KDP.

As some of you know, it ended up in my oil pan some time ago. So far, the truck runs fine... but I'm scared to death that my engine has some seriouse damage to it.

So, you KDP experts, is this really my KDP?

Notice that the ends are beat down and curled... and it is very smooth... as if polished... but has a lot of small grooves. It is round still, so I doubt it got beat up too bad.

Crossing my fingers...

Boy, and I thought my injection pump issues were bad... this would be way more mulah. :(

Is that a baked potatoe? Aluminum foil wrapped potatoe? Sorry Chris. . super happy it made it safely to the oil pan, now do as everyone says open the case and tighten all bolts and tab anything that can be tabbed or something that I've read that Joe D. has written. Bill

I have a 93 that I thought was the KDP and it turned out to be a bolt for the case that came loose, fell out and broke everything.

I'm gonna get in there ASAP and get to work on tightening stuff... I'm just not real farmiliar with the innards so I'll have to do some researching first.

So is that a "yes" on it being the KDP?

Funny lookin', ain't it??? :D

Yup, that be the unit. You shouldn't have any real trouble with opening her up. Here is a step by step on chaging the case in a newer rig. You won't have to do half of it but it's basically the same stuff so it may help you. Give yourself a little time and go for it. Good luck.

Ok, so if it damaged anything, there should at least be a crack on the timing case below the idler pulley?

I don't recall seeing one...

CB don"t take a chance, when we killed my kdp we found a cover bolt had backed out ratttled through the gear train and ended up in the bottom of the front cover:eek: but didn"t bust anything I was Lucky. Bill

I will, as soon as I can.

Ok, I've been looking around, and I can't find a crack in the timing case where it's supposed to be cracked.

I'm wondering if maybe it really didn't do anything?

Keep in mind, that when (I believe) it fell out, I was pointed sharply downhill and my engine was not even up to idle speed (I was in reverse, idling to help the wrecker :( ).

the lighter weight of the VE might have prevented the case from cracking... you might be able to just drive a new dowel pin in the hole with some locktite and stake the hole... locktite/tighten all the case bolts, and you should be good to go.

You won't be able to see the crack unless you remove the cast iron bracket that the idler pully bearing assembly is mounted in. The crack will be underneath it. Your pin has worn enough it may have gotten small enough to sneak through... . we can always think positive. :)
