and had been back only for the CP3, which all early 04. 5's had problems with.

Really? That's the first I've heard of that. What was wrong with it? I have a Jan '04 build date and the CP3 is untouched.

The only thing I'm watching is that I had an oil analysis done, and I had 2. 0% fuel in the oil.

I'd pay very close attention to that. Mine have always come back at "<1%" which is like saying "zippo".

The list on my truck excludes me from posting my info in this thread.

I definatly think they are the most trouble free trucks available right now. I have had Fords and Chevys alongside the Dodges since '03 and shortly after that went all Dodge/Cummins. Five trucks later, I still love 'em!

I've had one injector go on the '05, my ex selected R on the highway taking out a 48re, the heavy hauling '03 dually needed u-joints at 70k. I bought my current '06 heavily used at 72k, did ball joints, replaced the front driveshaft, and one window lift. Not bad considering almost 500k combined miles, many of them as dedicated work trucks. I have enough faith in the Cummins to not even bat an eye while buying a 2006 with over 70k miles. I know its hardly broken in, and the third gen chassis seems to be holding up very well too.

Love these trucks!

I posted a similar response to another thread...

I'm on my way to half a million miles - so far:

41K: fan clutch - under warranty

78K: lift pump - under warranty

98K: front shocks

122K: New DTT transmission - present to myself

128K: New front u-joints

134K: Water pump / valves adjusted

142K: Changed rear shocks

144K: Changed rear driveline u-joints

169K: Two new Wal-Mart batteries (one was spewing... )

176K: Front axle u-joints (again) / upper & lower ball joints / front brakes (again) / front pinion seal / front-end alignment / new tires again

Two complete sets of brakes, four sets of tires, one driver's seat cushion (too much methane)

All good stuff - couldn't be happier with the truck. I'm convinced that it will see 500K under regular maintenance. Oil change every 5K miles (Delo), fuel filter every other oil change. Air filter every 6th oil change (Ea189).

50,000 miles and only a small problem with the transmission at the 30,000 mile mark. Fixed with a new filter and minor adjustments. My truck has towed a fifth wheel weighing approximately 15,000 lbs. for more than 25,000 miles of its existence. I have owned Ford, Toyota, Chevrolet and Isuzu trucks. This truck is the very best I have ever owned.

bought my 98. 5 w/87k on the clock. Took 3 years to reach 116k w/city and light towing. Could have gone longer without doing anything, but vp44 was giving codes and the TQ was slipping like they all do. Found a broken exhaust manifold while changing the vp44 out. Installed RV275's but that isn't quality related.

Other than that, I just drive it and do the PMs when needed. Brakes/tires are consumables. Oh, the radiator was seeping on one of the headers, so put in a new one.

That's about it. I look for a lot of trouble free miles and smiles.

I have lost a rear u joint at about 25k and lift pump at 40k. Then I got the Smarty and I think the troubles are about to began. :-laf
My dads 06 had a check engine light at 500 miles, had the ECM re-flashed. His truck is all stock.

Mine was built in Mexico, it seems that some of the most trouble free CTD have come out of Mexico or is this just a coincident?

What's the word on the street?

The CP3'S leak fuel. There have been numerous threads about it, and at the time I casually knew of 4 trucks suffering when it happened to me. The cummins tech @ the dealer was doing a few pumps a week as fast as they could get them. I believe it was a bad batch after your truck was made. I fear fuel related troubles.

You think thats trouble free? Wow sounds like a LOT of repairs I know some was maintance. Seems a lot compared to most of the 3rd gens! You need to drive a 3rd gen and compare it to your 2nd gen. Theres a BIG differance.

My 06 has 31,000. Set a code when new, but after replacing sensor, nothing since. I am chasing high MPG. Last week I got 22. 2 with 600 pounds in bed.

in 2 12 valves, an isb, and an hpcr, ive lost the gov in my 1st p-pumped truck. the rest of the truck in another story... i still buy em and im not about to change that.

I have a Mega 4x4 with 36k on it and getting 22mpg. Not a single problem. Never been to the slealer. The best thing about that, is I don't get those reminders that I need my wipper fluid flushed!!!

while there is a big difference between the trucks you cant rule out time. the 3rd gen havent been out long enough to compare to an 8-10 year old truck. milage is barely an argument. there are some weeks where i drive 300 miles without touching hwy. i know that harder on my rig than a road trip. my 06 spent 3 days in the shop for a neutral safety switch. no doubt the drive train on the newer trucks are tough but i wouldnt count on them holding up any better than the 2nd gens. only time will tell.
