My 2000 2WD SWB has 155K and until now the only thing that ever failed was the lift pump at 100K. Been used to haul, tow 30' flatbed for work and have played hard with it. However, always changed the fluids and filters on or before sked.

Curently, having to rebuild starter and may have potential VP44 problem on the horizon. This truck has more that payed for its self. It has been too good to me for all these years and I don't mind putting some money into it.

Put 78000 on the 02 before i traded in on the 05 with no problems. ive put 75000 on the 05 allready and the only problem ive had on it was a seized rear u joint from no lube( worthless nongreaseable junk #@$%!). As for not knowing about the durability of the 3rd gens yet all i can say is that my 05 has no squeaks, rattles, ticks, etc while my 02 rattled allover the place.

Well yes it matters. It does make it confusing. Totaly differant trucks. Apples to oranges and for newbies I could see on some things it would get totaly confusing. For YEARS not much of this cross over posting took place. Now lots of cross over posting,no sigs or profiles filled out on lots of them etc. When I joined TDR that stuff was explained as I'm doing by the older posters quite a lot. Thats why the forums are broken up to start with. For the most part the issues and quality of 2nd and 3rd generations are much differant.

DPKetchum this thread was started by a 3 gen 5. 9 member, check his sig out. He wanted to know what others thought about their CTD which is why there are so many different responses to the question. I for one own two trucks and the CTD are in both, just thought I would defend the posts, one has the 6. 7, would that prevent me from sharing my experiences with the 6. 7 on this 5. 9 post?

No, but not just this post but a lot of 2nd gen. answers/comments keep appearing in a lot of threads. 6. 7 or 5. 9 a 3rd gen is a 3rd gen. 2nd gens are TOTALY differant truck. Some have no sigs or profiles but by the posts I know its a 2nd gen. with advise/answers that TOTALY do not have anything to do with a 3rd generation truck. What RTV to use on diff. covers, brake pulls, discussions on fuel pumps and VP44 pops up in thread, trans failures, valve adjust specs, torque specs sometimes are given and are very wrong. Hey read, post and drive a VW. I don't care as long as you make it obvisous what your driving and KNOW that your reply has NOTHING or you no nothing has to do with the thread at hand. Years ago when I had a 1st gen. truck they used to stop that sort of thing quickly and firmly so no one got wrong/invalid info. That forum back then was also real short and to the point if SIGs and truck PROFILE not filled out. As time has gone on with these forums more and more stuff gets lax. Like the old motto "You play you pay" well shucks, just hurt someone feelings when they cry no warranty after mods and tearing it up. Was no griping about this several years back. It like the MALL crowd has invaded these forums. Not here as much as the FREE forums but here also. Now that I have THAT off my chest back to the program.

The only problem Iv had with my 05 was a fuel rail sensor replaced shortly after I bought the truck.

Got 42K on the clock now and nothing else has gone wrong.

'06 Mega - 21,600 miles, no problems but the 'ol CEL/battery temp code @ 900~miles. ******* re-flashed and running strong since. :)

Well, well; no sooner did I start this post and my check engine light came on; no kidding the very next day. The good new is it was a computer software problem, The cold air sensor was reading incorrectly. All they did was reflash the computer with an updated version of software. The next day my mileage went from 17. 5, which I thought was very good to 21 mpg (not bad for a 4:10 rear end) and the truck seems to have a little more getty-up. So the problem actually turned out to be a good thing. ($80 to fix)

Trouble free?

Well, not sure that I'd call it trouble free, but I'd say the driving experience is definitely worth the trouble.

Bought my '05 at 50k miles, shimmed drivers door due to mis-alignment, replaced front pinion seal [twice], and added a new front driveshaft to eliminate some driveline wobble. Am at 80k now, and just recently replaced the rubber around the drivers door and am due for new ball joints before too long.

All in all, more maintenance than I ever had to do on my '00 Tundra up through 90k miles, but I would never go back. Easily worth while.

Now, about the troubles that were self inflicted... [alarm, lift, tint, etc. ] :)

the twelve valves are way more reliable, but the third gens are alot nicer to drive and tow with, the 24 valve 2nd gen likes to eat vp-44s and lift pumps, they all have issues, still better than a powerstroke or duramax... .

I'm at 70,000 never been to dealer, never would unless it was something major like the engine fell out. Still original brakes/tires.
