This is my first service on this engine and granted I went on guessing wich I dont usually do but was pretty sure of myself. From my best memory my previous Dodge trucks the oil fill was 12 quats for the engine and filter combined.

Well, I'm running the FS2500 and a PacBrake remote filter mount. When on the 6. 0 Leaker I added 1. 5 quarts for the FS2500 and estimated no more than . 5 quarts for the remote filter kit. My basic math said this was 14 quarts.

So I poured 3 gal jugs and two 1 quarts into it. After letting it idle to bring the pressure up plus a couple of minuets I checked. The oil on the dipstick stoped right in the middle of the 'safe' area there was a small break and a small 3/4" oil line above that. So I added a little more and now it's a sold mark way up the dip stick. Hmmmm.

Do I sound way off? It's an '05 CR motor.

Stock should be 12 quarts. So are you saying its over full now?You need to let it sit awhile before you check the oil because the turbo holds a good bit that takes time to drain back to the pan.

Ok. So I started with the original 12. Added 2 for the FS2500 and PacBrake. That brings me to 14. It looked a bit low then so I added an additional 1. Making 15 total added. It looked way to high so I started draining.

I removed 4 total full regular filters worth getting 3. 5 quarts out. At this point I realized that the oil level on the dip stick was not getting any lower. So... I cleaned the dip stick and inserted it for only 5 seconds, viola I was reading well below the ADD line. I was able to salvidge . 5 during the draining and put that back in. Added another full quart and now I'm sitting in the middle of the safe zone with the quick in and out method.

So it looks like I'll be needing 14. 5 quarts per change to get it to the top of the safe zone. Not really sure why letting it sit for a few minuets is giving me such a high reading. But it sounds like I've found the way to check it.

The first time I pull the dip stick on my '07, it will read correct on the front of the stick. However, it seems like once you pull it the first time, it will pull some oil up in to the tube and cause the reading on the front of the stick to be high on subsequent checks until you let it sit for a while. At least with my truck, the reading on the back of the stick will remain much closer to accurate each time.

I didnt think to check the back side of the thing. Since it's not a 'normal' setup it's been a bit of trial and error.

Not sure if the dip stick was bent or something during the install. Wasnt in on that part. Thanks for the insight.

This is good advice. I generally only check my oil after the engine has been sitting overnight. I tend to check it each morning before driving off.

Over the years I've learned that if I check it within 5 minutes after shutdown (as at the fuel station), 1/2 way up the dipstick is full capacity.

Your owners manual has some good advice on the subject: if the oil level is in the safe zone, leave it alone.

I thought I read where the 3rd gen had the same oil capicity as the 2nd gen which is 10 qts in the pan 1 qt in the filter. 1rst gen had 11 qts pan, 1 qt filter.

it's the same... 11qts... everybody puts 12 because it's 3 gal jugs.

I wouldn't split hairs draining half a quart of oil... if the engine doesn't want it, it'll push it out!

The correct fill quantity is eleven quarts on a Dodge ISB5. 9. It's twelve quarts on the ISB6. 7 used in a Dodge Ram. I think I always put about 11 1/2 quarts in for my previous '01 and '06.

It's funny how history repeats. Back in 2002/2003 we had the same discussion, many times over.

I believe the correct value is 12 qt. I have always put in 12 qt, and it has always filled exactly full (or close to it).

The 2003 FSM indicates 11 Qt, but that was corrected in the 2004 manual to read 12 qt (and remains 12 qt through at least 2006).

Ryan is correct... this thing was beat to death back then, issues with mis-marked dipsticks and all. The correct # is 12, with filter. Change it, drive it, let it set overnite, on level ground of course, and check it in the morning. If it reads anything other than on the full mark, file a little notch/mark on the dipstick for future reference. All of this works only if you remember to put the plug back in the oil pan after changing the oil. :-laf

I don't have an '06 owner's manual handy but do have the original owner's manual for my old '01. Here it is quoting from the '01 manual:

"Oil Capacity

Upper Safe Mark 10 qt.
Lower Safe Mark 8 qt.

Capacity of Oil Filter 1 qt. "

My memory may be failing but I feel certain the owner's manual on my '06 contained essentially the same information.

Well, I guess my memory was wrong. I'm sure that if an '04. 5 called for 12 qts, my '06 did also. The ISB6. 7 I own now does require 12 quarts.
