I went to Aero Tank, in Corona, Ca. , on Thursday and bought a DP-45, which is a 45-gal, aluminum, diamond-plate Aux. tank. It is an upright model, and I put it right in front of my toolbox, moving the tbx 10 inches to the rear to accomidate the tank.
When I got to Aero, the salesgirl tried to sell me a DP-45 which was sitting on the showroom floor. I stuck my hand inside it and wiped my fingers around and pulled my hand out and came out with really very dirty fingers. I said, "No, I want one in a box. " Well, they don't come in boxes, I was told. OK, then I wanted a fresh one. So a few minutes later a guy comes out with another DP-45 on a dolly. I stuck my hand in it also, through the big hole for the sending unit, and it was dusty, but a lot cleaner. I was really unpleasantly surprised that they didn't tape the openings so dust and dirt couldn't get in to the tanks. That first tank I stuck my hand into... I would hate to be the guy who gets that one! Also I saw a fair amount of weld spatter inside both.
Oh Well... . Deal with it!... I took it and rinsed it out with good old #2. Then I went to NAPA and got a fuel filter base (Napa # 4309) and a Fuel filter/water separator (Napa #3123) and a Napa elec. fuel pump. Took me 5 hrs. to remove my toolbox, install the tank and re-install my tbx. I also got the pump and filter mounted. Tomorrow I hook up the electricals and hook up the hoses.
This is a Stealth Auxilliary Tank, in other words it looks like a true Aux. tank, with all the hoses coming out the top, but is really a transfer tank. The reason I got it is that I couldn't find any good $300 transfer tanks which would ship UPS. Heck, if I was gonna pay 500 bills for one, I might as well get a true Aux. tank, even if I was going to hook it up as a transfer tank. (They'll never know the diff!) The Aero comes with an alum. diamond plate cover for all the plumbing which has to come out the top of a real Aux. tank, and I will make it all look REAL official. But really my set-up is just a line out the bottomof the tank, through the bed to the pump, through the Napa filter and into the tank. All regulated by an in-cab switch. This pump will pump 1 Gal. per minute, so I also got a little kitchen TIMER. Which runs on batteries, and every time I throw the switch I'll set the timer for 30 minutes or however much fuel I want to pump.
It IS pretty, all polished aluminum and nice welds, I'll give them that. I just expected it to be a little cleaner on the inside. But I took care of it.
