Hi,

I was given a k&n air filter (new) it has a 4 inch inside diameter (flange) which i needed once i put my hx35/12cm on my burban. My question is will it flow enough air for what i need. Here are the dimensions:5. 375 diameter at the base and it is a cone shape that tapers to 4 inch dia at the top. The length of the whole filter is 7 inches long. The part number is RP-4970. It looks small to me compared to my other paper filter? Any ideas if this will work for my set up or not?

Thanks Chris Oo.

My . 02, throw it away. I've heard they don't keep the dirt out as good as a BHAF. Search and form your own opinion.

CBorzoni,

I had a K&N filter in my 91. 5, for years. After reading about problems with filtering efficiency, with them, I checked out the plenum just behind the filter & found a lot of fine dust, in there. I, immediately, replaced the K&N with a stock filter.

The K&N did move a lot of air, though. I could 'peg' my 30 lb. boost guage, quite easily. After installing the stock filter, maximum boost, now, is about 25 lbs. No other changes!

I called K&N informing them of my 'dusting issues' with their filter. They asked me if any damage had been done to my engine. I told them that I had not noticed any changes, however, I'm sure the extra dust didn't do it any good. Basically, they were willing to pay for damages caused by their filter. They sent me a free return shipping label & I sent the filter back, to them. In turn, they sent me a full refund. No questions asked. Seemed to me like they had done this quite a few times. They had a return policy that worked flawlessly!

Their new filters may be OK, however, I have no way of knowing that.

Check out this thread for info on a short mileage cleanup of a K&N filter. I contacted K&N, and since I had bought mine at AutoZone, and the receipt had faded, neither place would refund me my money. But, they did send me a new filter, about which I reported in the thread.

I'd go with a aFe ProGuard7 (though I have no personal experience with them) or a BHAF. Get an Outerwears sock for it, and you should come out ahead in the long run.

And I have been running a K&N in my stock housing for about 4 years and never found any evidence of dusting in my turbo. I clean it about 2 x per year and oil it good per the instructions.

I had a K&N filter in my 95 for years. In my opinion it did not perform well and my mileage dropped. Two years before I sold the truck I took it in to a Cummins Southwest shop to replace a piece of fuel line. The shop foreman noticed that I had the K&N filter. He strongly advised me to get rid of it and to use stock filters for all the same reasons we have all heard on these posts. I did that and my mileage and power improved substantially.

dpuckett,

I have an AFE PG-7 in my '03 Dodge & it performs well. I have had 2 used oil analysis done, on the last 2 oil changes & the silicon levels are what you would find with a stock filter. My conclusion is that they work.

JLEONARD: I'm not questioning your results with the K&N. As I said, they may have improved them since I had mine. At least, I sure hope they did. I was just relaying my experiences with my K&N. BTW, I cleaned mine more than was necessary.

My first gen came to me with a k&n on it. After reading all the throw it away stories I checked it alot and never found any dust behind it so I put it on my 96. As far as there filters not filtering my dad's 94 has had a k&n since it was a month old, with 360K on it now I don't think it causes too much of a problem. It flows alot more air also. A stock filter will drag the vac. gauge all the way down with one full throttle run. The K&n will get about half when it needs cleaned. Just my $. 02 on the subject

Wow it seems to be a mixed preference in here wether to go k7n or not.

It seems to be personal preference on what you like. Silly question but who makes the BHAF? and is there a part number for it? or a supplier i can talk to to order?

Thanks Chris

I dont think either one endorses them, but dont hold me to it.

I had no issues with the K&N in the sandier prairies of Colorado. Got back to MO, and the dust is apparently much finer.

2nd Gen filter housings are smaller, so I can see how a K&N would flow more. I noticed a marginal difference, til the stock filter gets clogged in my 1stGen.

BHAF is a acronym for Big Honkin Air Filter, and it is. It is made by Fleetguard, Baldwin, Donaldson, Wix, et al. I forget the number offhand. Do a search and you can find it pretty easily.

filter

I have the asa modifieds intake with afe filter and filter skin. Checking the inside of the intake tube at oil changes I've found it to be spotless everytime,I think the afe filters along with a filter skin work very well. marc

I have 300,000 on my K&N. Observations are that the cleaning and re-oiling will really determine how well these filters work. . . . I have never had dust but I always take a day to clean, dry and re-oil the filter - time efficient they are not.

I could see daylight through the K&Ns I had. :-laf  If it works for you, run with it. If you are on the fence about it, I'd say go to something else. I guess it boils down to how fine the dust is in your area. Most dont pay that much attention.

maybe you guys are cleaning the k & n too often?

i think they work better as far as filtering goes once they have a little build up on them

i would be more worried about prob wash from the fan and where you locate your filter

get your truck warm and feel around with your hand and see just how bad the stock design is

the prop wash from the fan blew a ton of very hot air right at the corner where the filter is on my '92

it is not very difficult to rivit a shroud extension on the stock fan shroud

i would rather have lots of cold air (with maybe a little silt in it) than blazen hot clean air at a lesser volume

guarentee the cold air will make more power and help the thing live

guess everyone is different

i dont see why some of these guys with twins have the filter in the rear corner of the eng compartment behind the turbos?

if that was my rig i would figure out a way to move the filter location quick
