Interesting.

So whats the best way to go if you want to keep the stock airbox? Get the stock replacement, & remove the inlet that goes to the fender? Or keep it?

I had used the K&N filter for about 1 year and I got tired of seeing small abouts of fine dust in my tube to the turbo. The first time I seen this dirt I thought mybee I was crazy but the next time I checked it, it had gotten worse. I use the fleetgaurd. Ive also heard that the Oil from the oil type filters will coat your intercooler after time and slow airflow. I dont like the sound of that myself.

Just checked my turbo intake hose last night. Clean as a whiste! Amsoil filter doing its job and no oil residue on the turbine blades. Installed as is, preoiled, from factory into the airbox. Very happy with it after all the problems with the K&N.

Shortshift, get rid of the fender liner! Can we say MAJOR restriction??? Especially when BOMBed!

Well allllllriiiieeeghty then!! Rubbing my hands together. Thats what I was wanting to hear. The amsoil filter is starting to sound pretty good too! Tnx Vaughn.

Ok Dudes,

I just pulled the intake to the wheelwell (actually stuffed it back in the fender - pain in the a to remove). The truck does run better. I noticed that it is smoother when you roll on the throttle kinda heavy at lower rpm's. Now you can tell that it was choking a bit before and wasnt burning all the fuel as well. Time for the Amsoil filter?? hmmmmm.

I just pulled my RE-0880 to do a routine cleaning. I noticed no oil in the turbo hose but a fine white powdery coating on the inside which seemed harmless. Is this the dust residue that everyone is finding ??

The Amsoil filter is good, but more restrictive than the K&N.

105,000 miles on my '91 - absolutely NO dust or any OTHER residue showing on my turbo blades or inlet hose... Seems my K&N is keeping the dirt where it belongs... And letting the AIR get to where IT can do the most good! #ad

Gary-KJ6Q:

I couldn't agree with you more. I just
turned over 107,000 miles on my truck
and I have had NONE of the problems
listed with the "K&N" Filters.

Just threw a k&n in the stock box yesterday. It MIGHT be running slightly smoother (hardly noticable), and does have more intake noise. Not much more turbo noise though.

Is it worth 70 bucks?? Not sure. Is it reliable? That continues to be argued.

I don't like the thought of getting oil on the intake grid heater. Just doesn't sound good.

My opinion, if you stay w/ stock paper, you're not missing out on much, you have peace of mind, and saving a good chunk of cash. My k&n is up for sale...

filter minder is my indicator, about half way up with paper, zero with K&N. Installed in two CTDs for five years ,no dust,no oil.

Thanks for giving me yet one more thing to consider! Probably not a concern unless one over oils, but hey, I make mistakes all the time. #ad

Illflem, My filter-minder hasn't ever moved stock or k&n. You must be pulling alot of air!

Thats cool that you can see a difference between filters. Sorta proves the k&n does flow better. interesting...

Just a few thoughts/?'s for this topic:
1. Scott, did you get any more info on a papre filter for the cone replacement (Fram built?).
2. If more air is better and you are using underhood air (warmer) the intercooler will still cool it down, maybe not as much but it wont be as hot as underhood temp.
3. I beleive that Scott went with a cone filter for the area of filtration available vs flat.
4. If removing the "snorkle" from the fender increases air flow, why not add more holes to the bottom of the fileter box or just remove it completely? (finding a way to keep the filter in place in the top may be a prolem)
5. Why not close up the side hole and force air into the box via a firewall hole/hose - 4" to 2 2" holes?

Side note; to those who have added a hose to the standard filter box from the firewall - how much sound is in the cab? Some have complained that the PSA is "TOO NOISY" in the cab - but that is a 4" hole vice a 2" hole. (you can e-mail me on this if you want and I can add the info here)

SOTSU!!

Ben,after adding a 3" tube between the airbox and firewall I had to reinstall my silencer ring. It is a little louder at high boost, but nothing like a Phscotty. I did leave the stock fender wall hole open. Drops EGTs about 150 and the filter minder no longer moves at all.

I have 91K on my '96 and about 30K of that was with the K&N. The last time I looked... last week (I needed to get under the filter box) the ducting to the engine was bone dry, and clean, no dust etc.

Amsoil may be a fine product but the K&N is also.

Hold a K&N up to a bright light and you will see holes in the weave! I worked at a performance shop in the early 90's and we were told that dirt can't get through the holes by K&N because it sticks to the oil! Interesting, dirt can't pass through a hole because of the oil on the surrounding material, hmmmm... . how does that work exactly? I would ditch the K&N and go with the Amsoil nanofiber air filters, no oil and far better filtration! There was a test on a flow bench that was posted here a few years back and the K&N let more dirt through than any other filter by far!
