After reading about the KDP I am going to get mine fixed immediately. Is it better to have it tabbed or jigged? What is the rough cost to get this fixed at a shop?
 
I think most will tell you to tab the first gens. This is because the bolts that hold the timing housing to the block have a habit of loosening over time so while you're in there doing the tab on the KDP, you can apply loc-tite and re-tourque the timing bolts... two birds with one stone. As for the cost of having a shop do it, I can't help you there.
 
Don't go to a shop, jump in there and tab it youself. :--) You will feel better knowing it is done right and you did it. :-laf Contact Harold and get the tab kit, it comes with the fan wrenches and everything you need to complete the job.

If you remove the cover I'd suggest staking it in place rather than tabbing. Easier, faster, cheaper, and I would argue that it's better.

But just do it.
 
I would stake or use Harold's tab. Do not waste your time on the Cummins parts as they are for later model cases and will NOT fit our 1st gen cases.

Like others said, remove the cover and tighten up the case bolts. None of mine felt to be at the proper torque spec.

Thanks for the advice all around. I would try the repair myself, but just don't have the time or a big enough shop to fit my truck into. It's off to the mechanic's tomorrow!



Is there anything else that should be looked at when getting this 'repair' done?? I am a new member, so I still have a lot to learn about my truck.
