6MTHS AGO I DEVELOPED A REAL SERIOUS OIL LEAK. THOUGHT MY FRONT SEAL BLEW OUT. WENT TO REPLACE IT AND FOUND MY FRONT GEAR COVER HAD A CHUNK MISSING OUT OF IT. LOOKED LIKE SOMETHING JAMMED BETWEEN ONE OF THE GEARS AND THE INSIDE OF THE COVER. DOWEL PIN FELL OUT MAYBE????? COULDN'T FIND ANY LOOSE PARTS, BUT SHOULD I PULL THE OIL PAN AND SEE IF IT IS IN THERE?

When my dowel pin came out it was just blown right out of the engine, I found it lyin above the harmonic balancer. If it went past the break It usually drops between the cam gear and crank gear and then the cam comes out the block.

Breaking the cam is really rare. It happens, but not often. The normal failure is that it cracks the gear case behind the fan mount. The KDP may end up in the pan or somewhere at the bottom of the gear case. Check this web site for the failure and a description of how to repair the damage.

I didnt have time to replace my my housing so i JB welded the broke off chunk back on. haven't had a leak since. guess i better look in the pan for the pin?? thanks for the info. should have read my TDR more diligently.
