how do the hotshot guys legally get through dot?

First Cold Test

In a couple of weeks I'll be taking my trailer South. Last year a couple of the truck stops between Brunswick and Kingsland had big signs up saying no RV's and no pickups. Where is the best stop for fuel? Some of the small stations are a little tough with a 34" trailer. Thanks in advance.

You should always try to fuel at a busy truck stop... lots of traffic = fresh diesel = no algae. Maybe the GA boys can correct me on this, but I usually find the cheapest GA diesel near state boarders.

As for truck stop etiquet, pull in with the trucks, wait your turn in line, when the gal on the intercom asks for "company name" just tell her "private". Pump your fuel and IMMEDIATELY pull ahead so the next guy can get started... pay your tab and boogie. Enjoy the ride.

Going south on I-95 there are a bunch of truck stops just south of the I-16 exit to Savannah. They fuel RVs all the time & are prettty cheap.

Be careful on I-95 down toward Brunswick; Lots of SUV crazies goiong to FL; some construction & lane shifts; sudden stops. Saw a bad wreck in that area a month or so ago. :(

Exit Source

Since at the moment I only have the stock 34 gal fuel tank I can't go very far pulling a large 5er. I bought an Exit source , exit guide, and I don't have any problems worring about where to find fuel. It also tells you which exits have Truck Stops and which service stations, resturants, motels, etc can accomodate trucks, buses, and RVs. I know that this doesn,t answer your question, but one of these could help you find non-truckstops that can accomodate big rigs. I love being able to sit down before leaving and planning my stops and having alternates.

I-95 Georgia Fuel

Third exit south of I-16 US 17 So. (Richmond Hill Exit 87) There are 2 fuel stops, I've always used the Starvin' Marvin. First on left after traffic light. Pass the station and enter truck island from rear, and primary dispenser will be on the left side of truck.

Bob H,

There is a pretty busy fuel spot at exit 25 (I-95). I ususally fill at the Pilot E of the hwy. There is something on the W side as well but I don't know what it is. There is not RV lane at Pilot, use the big truck lane.

Try exit 2 for several more stations & lots of places to eat here too. I usually use the Williams if I am up that way. Again, no RV or PU place in the regular fuel islands. Use the entrance furterst W for access to the truck lanes, stay to the right nearest the bldg for auto pumps.

Once you cross into FL fuel goes up but not like I'll bet it has been up North.

The last exit before you cross into Florida has a Pilot and Wilco. I fueled at the Wilco, with no trailer one night 'cause it was raining and I didn't see the sign out front for the auto-diesel fueling. They didn't say anything at the fuel desk. Fuel in Georgia right now is about 30 cents a gallon cheaper than Florida. If it wasn't an extra 100 miles I would suggest you fuel in Darien. That's a TA with Amoco and I have always gotten good fuel there.

fuel stops

You could also use the "Flying J" fuel stops. They have an RV island, propane, RV dump stations, and are always clean. Plus give a discount on fuel (if you sign up for their dicscount card at no cost). Have places to park and rest or stay overnight if you desire.

For me they are the best around. They are in many locations up and down I-95.

One other thing to keep in mind, If the tanker is there filling there tanks---go on down the road. All of the crud in the underground tanks gets stirred up when tankers unload and then you get it in your filter.

Thanks for the info

Thanks for the info guys. I have a copy of "Next Exit" and I run down that way every year. I like to top off the tank before I get to Florida. That state is one of the worst for inflated prices near the interstates. Running around with a 34' trailer, doing comparison shopping isn't a lot of fun. Worse yet is backing out of a station with no diesel or unwelcome sign or no room.
