Front End Rebuild, Need Help

Hi guys. I have a 1991 1/2 intercooled automatic truck that I am working on that needs a KSB solenoid. I have checked in the dealer parts book and it looks like it is only offered as an assembly with the KSB valve for over $500. 00 (ouch) I pulled the solenoid out and it is a Bosch part with the number 0330106018 stamped into it. Does anyone know where I could get just the solenoid? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

I agree... go in to a Bosch or Cummins shop with the CPL number off your truck. They should be able to help you out.

The CPL is on the metal tag attached to the side of the gear case, just forward of the injection pump mount.

Pastor Bob.

If you have a 91 1/2, it will be CPL 1351. I would recommend Cummins first. I've found their prices pretty tough to beat.

If you're lucky enough to have the data plate on your engine (mine has had a new timing case sometime), jot down the engine number. They cant look stuff up just by the CPL, or so I've been told by the lazy swampeasterners here.

KSB

Why can't we treat the KSB like the KDP???

Yah, that's right. Do away with it. There is a cover in place of the solenoid on other applications. That is to say, there are VE pumps w/out the KSB.

For example, I have a bus here at school with the VE pump. I has no KSB. Further more, as of last Thursday January 22nd this engine did not have an operable block heater. The bus sets outside and starts fine.

And another thing. Not all the people on this board use the KSB ie disconnected. Me included.

So the bottom line is thus;

Do away with it, the engine will start and run just fine, even in temps of zero degrees.

Save the $500 for engine mods/repairs you really need!

Thanks everyone for your replys. I will call Cummins tomorrow and see what they say. Greenleaf, I would love to just leave the truck with the bad KSB solenoid but it will not idle when it is really cold. To my understanding the KSB boosts fuel pressure when the engine is cold to help it idle so I really have no choice but to fix it.

I too was wondering why the KSB could'nt just be eliminated? My rig is going to mainly be a summertime cruiser anyway, and as far as I'm concerned the less bullcrap I gotta wire up, the better!

Personally, I think it would be  to have a hand throttle installed to assist in warming up.

Don

Yeh, the 5. 9 in the bus does have a throttle cable. However.

It still starts fine and idles fine. Use the throttle cable to speed warmup.

Although my personal CTD is not a daily driver, I have started it on cold days and it too starts/runs just fine.

Would be nice to hear from a pump tech on this subject... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... .
