Hummers

Clinton vs. Titanic

Once, when I was in band camp, I mean on the TDR, I asked a stupid question, when I first joined, I was treated kindly by several members, and the question was answered. They then politely told me about the search features. That is the way it should be handled.

You dont hit a child for doing something they dont know is wrong, the same goes with new members. A sticky would be a good idea for the benefit of all newbees.

Whitmore, dangling a carrot in front of desperate VP44 owners is not funny. It is childish and cruel. Your reputation and integrity will suffer, in the long run, for acting in such a manner.

Bigsaint, I too like humor. But post whoring disguised as humor is just a pathetic way to draw attention to yourself, and your post count.

For once I agree with you. .

Many people are very timid about using a computer in the first place. I would never support anything that would discourage them from asking a question even if it had been answered many many times.

I am sure glad that when I was new that experienced TDR members had the patience to point me in the right direction by whatever means. As the old timers get tired of the same questions over and over and tend to draw back some, all the folks that the old timers have helped have an obligation to step up and help out the new guys so the knowledge gets passed on and we all benefit.

I never said we should flog the new guys for asking the same questions over and over..... Maybe a "sticky post" on how to use the search engine and what can be found in there would be helpfull. I know we have a new guy forum but I have never really figured out what it was for, there seems to be a mishmash of posts about anything and everything in there. The FAQ is nice but somewhat confusing when you jump from the forum into it.

I too was a newbie at one time, what I did was read for about 3 months before I ever posted even one question. I don't want to discourage any one from posting, but this site is getting old real quick with all the questions about the same thing. This problem has been hashed out before but the solution has still not been discoverd.

You want to see a site that is hard on new guys, check out www.pirate4x4.com They where talking about having a test that newbies would have to take before they where granted permission to post..... and they have a special set of smiles for the new guys.

Well that is because all our trucks are the same,we all had choices on which to add mods to our trucks,so naturally it would get stale, but with the 2003 coming out it should liven things up around here, and that might mean less bickering. .

Less Bickering. That would be nice.

Very well said, Diesul 1. These discussion boards are a lot like going to school. The oldtimers are teaching the newbies. When we learn a lot about our trucks here, the school doesn't go away as there are always newbies comming aboard learning the same old stuff. Like a good teacher we must not get bored with it. We don't have to respond, or even read the question about the BAHF, leave it and somebody will answer. Thankfully somebody like Illflem and a lot of others is always ready to jump in and help answer questions. THAT helps make this board great! I remember comming on board and not sure if it was a mental block or what, but I had a lot of trouble using the search feature. I still ask a lot of questions about things I'm doing for the first time, and try to answer questions that I have been through. Give and take.

Well said:)

I would agree with the above statements about wanting to welcome new people to the site and not wanting to put up any barriers to them. I myself have been around here for over 3 years. I don't read most of the posts that are going over stuff that has been hashed over a bunch of times in the past. I really just don't have the time, but it's not that big of a deal to skip past it. I do mention the search feature in articles in the magazine regularly. I try to avoid making too many posts sticky at the top of the forums because they tend to get glossed over plus they take up space on peoples screens. Mostly I try to put stuff up there that is new or to try and correct problems we have been having with the guidelines, etc. I just made a post sticky that gitchesum put in the 1st time Cummins Diesel Owners forum on searching. IMO, the best way to handle the situation with new users asking things that have been gone over in the past is to do as said above - give them an answer and point out the search feature or do the search for them and post a link to that search. BTW, I have had people ask that we require new users to pass a test before they are allowed to post - which will never happen on here.

The 1st time Cummins Diesel Owners forum was created to help alleviate some of the issues with repetitive issues coming up over and over in the regular forums. The thought was that by creating an area for new owners that some of those posts would be in there and those interested in answering those questions could go there to do so. It's been very successful with 432 posts in that forum that would have been in the other forums. The post above comparing the site to a school is excellent.

I have heard complaints from people that there is so much repetition, there's nothing new, so many people are leaving, etc. That isn't accurate when I look at the statistics - since March of 2001, 6256 people have registered for the site, in that same period only 407 people haven't renewed their subscriptions - that's an excellent renewal rate. Traffic levels continue to rise at a rate of between 10-16% every month and we're setting new peak user numbers regularly (currently the peak user record was set 2 days ago at 304 online simultaneously). It is only natural that once you have been here for a while that you will have read or heard most of the things about your truck. It's easy to look at all that and take it that is all that's there. It's also easy to look at the small amount of conflict that is here and get disgusted with it. It's not that much harder to look past that and see all the camradarie, new information, help with troubleshooting problems, etc that goes on here and appreciate what the has to offer, IMO. Even after 3 years and reading almost every single post put on the site I learn new stuff from the site almost every single day.

Believe me when I say that there are times that I get disgusted dealing with the problems on the site, etc. When that happens I try to sit back and look for the good stuff going on - it's not hard to find.

What I think (like anybody cares)

I think Bigsaint (Scott) is just bored. I'm at the point right now were BOMB's are much more expesive than they used to be and I just can't aford to go out and buy a $2,500 clutch when ever I want. :{ So right now I'm bored with the truck BOMBing, which in-turn means I'm kind of bored with the site. :( I was just logging on every night to read some of the jokes and some of Doc's crazy posts. Now those guys aren't posting anymore so I don't frequent the site like I used to. :(

What I did to remedy the problem was join a nother site. This site is an ATV related site; www.atvnation.com I've now been busy in may spare time BOMBing my 2 quads and posting on this site. They have a Trail Side Stories forum that is great for reading all kinds of Humorus posts. :D Now when I come to this site it's just to check up on things and see if anyone is getting together in my area or if there is a Diesel Raley happening soon.

If your bored try something else for awhile it helps releave the boredom. :D

Scott, Hows the new Bike?

My truck will always be better than yours no matter what you do to your truck simply because mine is mine. ;) Same goes for all of my other stuff. My oil is better, my air filter is better and so on and so forth.

**The above is this members opinion and not that of the TDR or its owners/managers. **

I do like to hear about and gain useful knowledge and we have many who offer it for free with no strings attached... . I greatly appreciate you guys!

Please do your part to keep the TDR a top notch resource for Cummins owners and THINK BEFORE YOU PRESS THOSE KEYS!

Mr. Moderator Steve sir,

I don't really know what the software of this site will allow or how much work it would intale(the all encompassing factor), but could their be another type of search? Maybe even incorporated in First Time Owners or just below it? This one would have key words that would already be in place ie... .

1. Lift Pump

2. BAFH

3. Oil

This is very much like the present search except the the topic is already input for the new members. All they have to do is pick the topic that they are interested in.

I know that it might not be practable but for the new comers it might help ease them into the regular search engine. Even the old timers have trouble with the search feature ie Texasdieselkid had a problem the other day until someone explained that numbers didn't work so hot in the 3 word search.

Just a thought.

WD.

Is there repetition? Yes. But after two years on the site, I still don't know how to post pictures, do the searches well or add links that so many HELPFULL people have done.

I will answer any Newbees repetitive question and maybe suggest how to search. Maybe us inbetweeners and old timers could do this.

The site has helped me in many untold ways. I can be 200 miles away and in trouble and ask a repetitive question that bails my a$$ out.

The WEALTH of knowledge on this site is un-believeable! We can't afford to lose good people from the site.

You Moderators have a BIG job trying to keep ALL 13,000 subscribers happy and in focus. I sure couldn't do it!!

Basically we all have to agree to dis-agree:)

"Can't We All Just Get Along?" Chris

You guys remember Old School ??

He was one of the first to jump in and answer a few questions that had been beat to death before my arrival...

He answered my questions, and included a few threads to check out, then added "if you don't understand something in them just ask". .

I got pretty well the same attitude from nearly everyone when I asked a 'tired old question'.

The rare few who simply posted . . " do a search"... resulted in my hesitating to not only ask a question, but respond to one since I didn't really know were that person was coming from since I thought we were free to "ask away".

I've always (and still today) answer every post I can, if I think I can contribute.

I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've posted my "how to check/set the TPS", lord, I've litterally lost count.

So, I typed it up as a text document and now if someone asks, I cut and paste, but don't say 'go do a search'.

Like Deezul 1 said, its payback for all the guys who helped me, including Old School, and its "pay it forward" too.

Maybe someone I get to help will pick up the ball when I'm not here to do it.

Just my ramblings and no harm meant. .

Bob.

Bushwkr,

That is the attitude that keeps me coming back to this site.

So much knowledge and so little time and money.

Thanks to everyone who helps and especially to those who are bored to tears with repeated questions and answers.
