I took my truck into the dealer for a red fluid leak under the power steering pump area. They "think" it is leaking between the power steering pump and reservior. They qouted me $1300+ to replace the pump, a bracket or two, and a hose claiming Dodge recommends it all be done at the same time. The pump alone was like $500.
There was evidence of weeping before, but on returning from a camping trip (Albuquerque NM to San Antonio TX) found it leaving a few drips per day now. There are drips of fluid starting on the bottom of the reservior on down to the steering. No evidence of a leak on the sides or top of the reservior.
For the life of the truck (33k miles), the power steering would "hiss" when turning after driving for an extended period (it would be silent if driving straight, so basically when you would turn off the interstate, it would hiss). The dealer claimed they could not replicate it and it was never much of a concern. They recently checked the hose that has been known to have an inner shield problem and cause a hiss all the time, but they said that was okay. Not sure this matters, but thought I would mention it.
So I am wondering:
1. Is this a normal leak spot since it is expensive to do if they "think" that is it.
2. Is there is a less expensive option (replace seals?)
3. Can I replace the pump myself (looks like I can get to it from inside the fender liner)
4. Is a new pump design needed with all the other parts (and what are they)?
5. Would aftermarket parts be acceptable (any recommendations)?
Thanks for any assistance you may be able to offer,
Chris
