I took my truck into the dealer for a red fluid leak under the power steering pump area. They "think" it is leaking between the power steering pump and reservior. They qouted me $1300+ to replace the pump, a bracket or two, and a hose claiming Dodge recommends it all be done at the same time. The pump alone was like $500.

There was evidence of weeping before, but on returning from a camping trip (Albuquerque NM to San Antonio TX) found it leaving a few drips per day now. There are drips of fluid starting on the bottom of the reservior on down to the steering. No evidence of a leak on the sides or top of the reservior.

For the life of the truck (33k miles), the power steering would "hiss" when turning after driving for an extended period (it would be silent if driving straight, so basically when you would turn off the interstate, it would hiss). The dealer claimed they could not replicate it and it was never much of a concern. They recently checked the hose that has been known to have an inner shield problem and cause a hiss all the time, but they said that was okay. Not sure this matters, but thought I would mention it.

So I am wondering:

1. Is this a normal leak spot since it is expensive to do if they "think" that is it.

2. Is there is a less expensive option (replace seals?)

3. Can I replace the pump myself (looks like I can get to it from inside the fender liner)

4. Is a new pump design needed with all the other parts (and what are they)?

5. Would aftermarket parts be acceptable (any recommendations)?

Thanks for any assistance you may be able to offer,

Chris

first UR GETTING BENT OVER FROM DEAler! been there many times

several member have had a failed hose (inter wall collapsed and caused hissing noises) i would replace the line yourself.
Then address the steering leak if its not covered by warranty .
there a a few post on the line hiss noises and pumps and replacements. I avoid dealer at all costs!

Seal kit is listed for the reservoir, PN 68034315AB. The reservoir is PN 68034303AB and includes the seal kit. $70 vs. $120.

Thanks! I will try to go for the whole kit for just a bit more. Much cheaper than the dealer if it is the cause of the leak. It looks like I may be able to get some access to work on the reservoir if I remove the inner fender guard.

What hose is the one that causes the hissing? Do I need to replace it or just remove the inner sleeve?

Thanks again, you guys are GREAT!

It is the high pressure hose that comes from the pump to the hydroboost. Pull the line from the hydroboost and if it is bad the white teflon liner will be sticking out the end of the hose end you removed. If you do a search you should find a photo of what it looks like. I'm positive someone posted theirs that failed.

Just reading old stuff and this one made me LOL. I had to have a rear pinion seal replaced in Albuquerque, 320K miles and they wanted to replace my power steering pump for $700+. I ended up replacing the pump at 348K miles for under $100 and a lot of cussing in my garage.
