I am looking at swapping a first gen 12V into my 49 chevy pickup and am trying to figure out if it has any chance of fitting. Could someone measure from firewall to front of intercooler so I have an idea? Appreciate the help guys.

engine transplant

41 inches to the front of the radiator and 44. 5 inches to the front of the intercooler and 3/4 of an inch more for the condenser. But those numbers are not relative to putting the engine in. That is just how Dodge did it. What is relative is whether you have access to metal working equipment because you can definitely put the engine in if you want it in there bad enough, you will have to cut into the fire wall. The (49 to 53?) trucks show their roots in that everything is pinched toward a narrow front design. Lots of stuff will have to shove over, out and around. Add some springs to the front axle and good shocks. You might want to go to a heavier axle with bigger king pins. Maybe not, I have seen a big block in the old pickups and the 6b isn't terribly much heavier than that.

An eaiser install would be the four banger. It is a shaky devil but we have run one in a one ton and it has given VERY good service. I am sure you can make the tires smoke with some power mods on the four cylinder.

JLeonard can give you some good advise. He and his sons installed a 6b in a S10

Do it. Take lots of pictures. This is the sort of project we first genners groove on. And you will have braging rights for a life time. (Of course that and a dollar will get you a cup of coffee) Just be darn sure you understand 'it ain't plug and play'.
