AGE OLD DEBATE: COLD AIR INTAKE vs STOCK AIR BOX

Main bearing torque procedure

Hey All,
New to the forum. Working on a 2006 Ram 2500 5.9 cummins that has a loud knock at idle and rev. I pull the valve cover thinking it was one of the injectors and found the #2 cylinder lifter rod off the rocker arm. The lifter rod is not bent. Any idea what would cause thing? I'm guessing piston slapping up against the valve? should I try to assemble it back together?

The truck was given to me by my father in law. His son was driving it when this happened so I'm not sure what exactly happened to cause this.

Maybe way to high RPM's?
One way to find out. Loosen the 10 mm bolt, put the push rod back where it belongs, torque to 27 ft lbs and cross your fingers. You are either gonna be a hero or a zero. Regardless, if there is any damage, it's already done.

Gotta pull the head to see whats wrong. Unless you have more money than time. In that case, $15K will get you a complete drop in. Everything replaced or re manufactured to new or better than new specs. Injectors, hp pump, wiring harness and all sensors. Everything included except power steering, ac and vacuum pump. Just add water and oil. 1 year unlimited mileage guarantee. You can do the swap in a weekend. Your good core gets you back $2-2500.00

The truck was given to me so I decided to pull the motor and inspect / rebuild it. It's my little summer project truck.
I spoke to my brother in-law who was driving it when it broke down. He said there was an oil leak and it eventually ran out of oil when he was driving it. The dash went crazy and he lost power and pulled over

If he is driving another diesel: best take it away and 1) Make him help you fix this. 2) Make em walk awhile. Some people don't deserve to be around vehicles until they gets some education.

The oil use is a bad thing to begin with so problem #1. Problem number two is running out of oil and by looking at the pictures, yeah, the inside of that engine is nasty looking: not cared for. Problem number 3 is a ruined turbo.

I would cut the oil filter open and see how bad things may be.

I'm already halfway through the removal process. I got the front end taken off and turbo, exhaust manifold removed.
I'm a little confused as to what needs to be removed on the right (drivers) side. Do I need to remove the entire wire harness? I already removed the power steering lines and I have to disconnect the fuel lines.

Oh and I need to get the special tool to take off that big ass fan up front.

** EDIT** Just watched a video. Looks like I can leave the wire rat nest harness on the engine block and disconnect it from the firewall plugs. Just have to pop the fuel lines off the fuel filter and a few other things.

I would have suggested leaving the PS hoses on and unbolt the vacuum pump/PS pump from the engine. The VP/PS assembly can be rebuilt without removing the hoses.

Scott, this is 3rd gen. No vacuum pump and the PS pumps are essentially non rebuildable, just replace with updated OE.

OP, if it ran out of oil then look the crank over real well. It probably starved #5 and #6 rods and mains. If the rods are done then options ar ewide open for better parts.

Anyone who says taking this motor out is full out shiat. There are so many little connections to disconnect on the driver's side. Talk about a pita.

Should I take the fuel filter off and the trans cooler off? It's such a pain to get up in there
