Kyllo,
To change the engine oil in the Cummins it helps to have an aftermarket drain device. Not that this is a big deal, just it does make the process quicker and easier. I use Geno’s Finger Touch Drain Valve, others prefer the EZ Drain and Tube and yet some like the new Magnetic Drain Plug. They all work well and everyone has their little quirks about each.
I open the drain valve and the oil drains in my modified joint compound bucket. I used a razor knife and “carefully” cut the top of the bucket just above the handle attachment points. Fits under great. Something that will hold 4 gallons to prevent splashing when removing the bucket will do.
Then to the top. I remove the clamp and hose from the turbo and then remove the air filter box by pulling straight off. The mounts slide on threaded studs, there is no other attaching/securing hardware. Removing these components is not required however, I have found it gives me a little more leverage for loosening the filter and if this is your first filter change, you will need it.
To the filter, I loosen the oil filter with oil filter pliers from SnapOn, P/N: YA4050A (actually Blue Point). You can get similar pliers almost anywhere at a cheaper price. I put a one gallon plastic bag around the filter and remove by hand. Any spills stay in the bag.
Now it’s just a matter of reversing the process. Note: Fill the filter and lubricate the gasket with clean oil (of course).
