Good thing it is winter, maybe I can get the truck in for some repairs.

1 ) Anyone have the Cummins part # for the rear main seal?

2) Has anyone experienced an oil leak that seems to start somewhere at the rear of the fuel injection pump, the side towards the block? I can't see much without removing the prime loc fuel filter.

I can't seem to find the receipt from when I did mine, but I will keep looking. The rear seal is pretty easy to do once the transmission is out of the way. It is way easier to do than the oil pan gasket which I decided to do since everything was apart and it was starting to leak a little. I should have left that one well enough alone. The new pan gasket now is leaking worse than the old one. :{

I need that part number as well if anyone has it as I just removed my transmission and clutch for my SBC OFE install and the seal is not leaking but the bottom of the seal housing where it mates to the oil pan is leaking pretty bad, so I wanted to pull that housing off and get a new seal and RTV up the back of the oil pan.

There isn't a gasket between the oil pan and seal housing is there? Just some black RTV should do the trick to seal it back up right?

Also, is the rear seal that cummins offers the one with the rubber outer edge and installed with soapy water or the one installed with Loctite 277?

And do the bolts holding the seal housing to the block also torque down to 18 ft/lbs. like the oil pan bolts?

Thanks a lot!

I was just doing a search for this, and this post came up. :)

I've got a similar leak but I think it starts up front further, as the vacuum pump is covered, and the pan rails, and the cooler lines, and the engine mount on that side. I have reason to believe it isn't the injector pump seals since I had that off this summer. Also I put a new timing cover seal in and sealed the timing cover gasket back up with RTV while I did the KDP fix.

Joe, give me some time and I will try to find the part number and a schematic for ya. I've got an online repair manual database subscription (wheeww :)) that I am subscribed to and for some reason the site is down now. I'll try to get back to you if I don't forget.:-laf

Great! Thanks, TMaas.

Is that rear main gasket the gasket that goes behind the rear main HOUSING that the rear main seal is installed in?

Also, is black RTV enough to seal up the bottom of that seal housing with the back of the oil pan or is there a little thin gasket back there?

Thanks again, I'll e-mail ya for those reference pics. :D

Unless they gave me the wrong one, my p/n was different for the rear main seal.

It is 4089342. It was $36. 21 from Cummins Great Plains in Rock Island, IL.

I would base more one your numbers, as I haven't ever had to do this and am just going on numbers that i'm looking up. Although, they should be accurate. Maybe we're getting two different rear gaskets mixed up. Wish I could post the link on this site with the p/n's and the repair info/pics, but i'm fairly sure that you have to have a subscription to view the page. I received mine for free from a Technical College.

That gasket is supposed to be the one that goes between the block (?) and the rear seal housing. I'm going to try and post the pic of the area.
