I've been experiencing heater core issues for some time now with an occasional faint coolant smell with the heater on. I've also never had very strong air flow from the vents in the 5+ years that I've owned this truck.

Anyway, with highs in the 20's and lows below 0 and a 30 minute drive to work everyday I REALLY need some heat! If I let it sit and idle for extended periods it kinda wants to defrost some but nowhere near what is needed.

I have a piece of cardboard in front the radiator and the temp gauge rests about 190 while cruising down the hwy but I get very liitle air at all through the vents and what there is is lukewarm.

I've been thinking about and putting off doing the heater core/ac core for some but I just wanted to run it by a few others to get any other possible ideas of what else might be wrong. TIA

I also flushed the core out last fall in hopes of increasing air flow to no avail.

I would do the heater core, because once you are in the dash you will find what is closing off the duct ways for the air flow.

In a Toyota I once worked on the vermin had packed all the duct's with insulation. Talk about wondering if Hantavirus was gonna get me.

sounds like your blend door is not working! Just my 2cnts

I think this is the problem I am starting to have. No heat during warmup and then after turning temp dial a few times I have heat. Also, it smells of melted plastic at times. ?. ?:confused:

I had an 06 that had very little heat/defrost air flow and a heavy vibration when the fan was on high. I removed the heater fan motor and found a broken piece of a door in the fan and the broken door blocking the heater fan inlet. I removed the broken door through the motor opening as a quick fix, heat & defrost restored.

I have seen a couple of 2nd gens with broken /stripped heat knobs, feels like it turning the shaft but in reality it is not.

I think that the temp is controlled by a cable and door as mine is. I would make sure that door is moving.

You can pop the heater motor out and use a light and mirror to see what in the h-e double hocky sticks is going on in there.

There is nothing worse than a chilled to the bone commute. :{

Mike. :)
