I been having a problems with my truck as it shifts through the gears going into 3rd my foot is pushing down but the truck just slows and drags along intill in about 5-10 seconds it will pick up then it goes good.

My truck stops running when it has a load in reverse also it idles lower(500rpm) since i've had the trans rebuilt i think it was a little lower than normal to begin with any help would be great, how do i raise the idle level ?

Any help would be great thank's.

It sounds like you may have a tie-up problem, meaning that the trans is staying in 2nd gear and trying to shift into 3rd at the same time. The 2-3 shift requires to things to happen. The front band needs to be released and the front clutch needs to apply. If the band is dragging it won't be long before the trans is slipping. I'd take it back.

Thank's for the reply but this was happening before i had the trans rebuilt it's not the trans i'm thinking it's related to the fuel but i'm not sure, could valve adjustment not being done at 48,000miles do this

I turned up the idle on the engine to about 750rpm -780rpm,i think it might be slightly high now but i think i'll drive it a little bit then turn it down a smidge.

It runs stronge now when i'm backing up a slope.

I still have that problem with it dragging after it hit's 3rd gear then it pick's up up fine and runs like a late frieght.

Any body with some ideas sure would appreicate a bunch.

5 speed auto trans? Which trans do you have? Or is that a typo?

In gear, it should idle around 750 RPM. In neutral/park, it should be 800-850.

Please provide some more details about what is happening when it shifts into 3rd (Direct).
  • Which (if any) trans parts were replaced with non-stock parts?
  • Is the TC locked already?
  • What's the RPM just before and just after it shifts?
  • What's the boost pressure when it shifts?
  • What's the (approximate) pedal position? (1/4? 1/2? full?)
I tend to agree with the 2nd/3rd tie-up (too much overlap), but other factors might be involved.

I've been working alot with my other truck so i havn't had a chance to test drive it again. It is a 5 speed auto when you shift it manually with the over drive off, it has an extra gear after 1st so it drops only 45% instead of 65% i think. It's easier to pull a heavy load of the line it was built by Russell Sylvis in Simi Valley Ca.

I'll try and give you more info when i drive it.

Yes your right it is about 800- 850rpm when in neutral.

I can lock my TC when i get going out of 1st and see if that does anything.

thank's for the reply. ttfn
