My 2001 2500 2WD lost compression on #5 on the freeway. It has 167K on it. The shop says it has 140 lb.compression on #5 and 450 on #6.
The injectors are good and they ruled out a head gasket. They say a short block would total $9700. This is a nice Laramie, but it is only worth 10K to 11K.

Any ideas out there?

If they did a compression test they had the injectors out and should have run a bore scope into that cylinder for a look see.

X2 on the above, get a look, as a burned valve appears to be a common failure - least when I looked around shops working on mine. So it may not need a shortblock.

I would check the rocker and push rods for that cylinder before I pulled the head just to make sure you don't have an issue keeping a valve from seating.

Yes but any shop that quick to want to sell a ten thousand dollar engine may not have been smart enough to see a bent push rod or other problem

How for sure did they rule out the head gasket did they even bother turning the engine over to check to see if the calves are opening and closing
