I picked up my 2004, 4 x 4, Quad Cab, 2500 this week and am starting to make transfers (tool box, removable ladder rack and hitch). I have a fifth wheel trailer. I know that there were a lot of discussions about lowering the bed height for 2001 Trucks but not much in the recent past and I wonder if anything has changed. What is the most effective way to lower my bed height? I will be raising the trailer (already flipped axles) by adding taller tires but want to keep it as low as possible so that it doesn’t blow over too easily. Will the TSR for changing the shocks and removing lift blocks for the 2001 apply to the 2004?

Welcome to the TDR. The TSB for the 2001 will not work on the 3rd gens because it is a totally different truck. I have looked at the axles, and noticed that there are two spacers of about 1/2 inch each that might be able to be removed. 1" could make a significant difference.

Are you planning to move the older fifth wheel hitch? not sure you can do it because of the box frame and dodge prohibition about drilling the frame.

there are new fifth wheel hitchs which special box frame attachments

I also don't know what to do with my truck/trailer combo. The fifth wheel has not been lifted yet(springs are under) I thought about taking out the little lift blocks on the back axle(someone here did that) ,to level the truck but I may still have to lift the trailer. I know these trucks look sweet with a leveling kit but I don't want issues with steering.

It seems that the added height is just a poor solution to engineering shortcomings. Why on earth is it necessary to make the truck so high? Obviously the guy designing the back end wasn’t clever enough to do it in less space.

I have flipped my axles on the trailer and will be buying taller tires. ( I need new ones anyway. ) There is a handy tire diameter calculator at tire diameter calculator This has helped me select tires that may not have been suggested by the dealer who only wants to sell what he has in stock.

Just would like 2 inches off the truck without hurting something else... .
