I had my doubts about the cost effectivness of the mag-hytec diff cover, but after installing it on my 99 2500 w/ a dana 70, Ijust took a 1000 mi trip towing my 11,000 lb (+) 5er this truck is rated at 9500 ( I Think), but overloaded, anyway you look at it. I already had a mag-hytec trans pan, installed when the 3 disc converter was installed transmission temp never got over 150 and the rear at its worst, only gained 20 deg. (up the long pull on 95 to Tonopah,NV) plus, I gained almost 2 mpg, to 14. 6 mpg over the whole trip. thank you mag-hytec and CUMMINS!!!! REAL TRUCKS DONT HAVE SPARK PLUGS!

To be clear, you're saying that by adding a $240 diff cover, you gained 2mpg?

With local fuel at $3. 60 per gallon, payback would be just over 6000mi. As far as cost effectiveness goes, this sounds better than the claims of most fueling boxes or injectors! Hmmmm.

Would anyone care to explain how a cover increases mpg? I can understand a superior synthetic gear oil adding a little mpg (not 2 mpg, though); but a cover?

I kind of think maybe the MPG was a coincidence. I like my pan for the capacity and the drain plug. It make life easy for changing the oil therefore it gets done every spring reguardless of the mileage it has on it. It would be nice to know the before and after temps as I don't have a sending unit in my cover. I have one for the transmission and have thought about putting in a toggle switch so that I could toggle between them to see where they are at.

The cooling fins on the rear cover acts like a sail and helps catch the tail wind, which pushes the truck along. DERR :-laf

the rear cover lowered gear temp, but also added mileage, due to my going to rp 85-140 synthetic gear oil, as well as adding peace of mind ( I lost a ring gear in my 02 3500 drw towing a 18,000 lb gooseneck in the middle of the mojave 120 deg. summer) if anyone is doubtful, I have docs (mileage and fuel recpts) that I submitted to my employer. filled up in pahrump, nv again in elko, nv,468 mi,32. 2gal, last trip (towing this rig) took a little over 38 gals. stopped halfway to top off-a gain of 2 mpg ,no wind in either direction
