Well Guys... I know you are going to put a review of the Mag-Hytach transmission pan on the board soon. . But Just to steal your Thunder. .
I put my pan on 2 weeks ago and need to crow about it NOW!!
This thing is Bullet Proof... . totally Heavy Duty. . Well Made . . And Looks AWESOME!!
Of course the later will be see only when I service the transmission... But while I'm Down there the truck looks like it's going 200 MPH just standing there. . #ad

I am A CNC Programmer/Supervisor By trade and can tell you that this thing was precision machined.
The die that was used to cast the pan must have cost a MINT. .
The Secondary Machining was perfect and the Mill Marks left over only addad to the looks of the fins already cast into the pan.
The Powdercoat was FLAWLESS the seat was totally FLAT. . (I ran A . 0001" Indicator across the seal surface and got A total of . 0003" over the entire surface!!)
Now, realize that this is ALUMINUM which isn't really known for a great coefficient of expansion.
Considering the indicated area and the material. . this thing was machined to Aircraft quality... (Or as I like to say. . We're making Rocket Ships here. . )

The Install went without a hitch. .
My arm did get a little tired holding the thing up while installing the first 2-3 Allen Cap Screws...
This thing is A LOT STOUTER than the Factory pan even though my 98. 5 2500 already had the extra capacity for fluid.
Ordering the pan through Geno's Garage insured that a new filter and gasket came with the pan. . (something ordering direct fron Mag-Hytech didn't include)

Owners of 98 or Newer trucks BEWARE... the filter Geno's supplies is WRONG!!!
Go out and buy the Hard Cased Filter at the dodge dealer. . Throw the "Soft" version that Geno sends you away... It wasn't designed for the added capacity of that transmission or the added flow rate.

If I was to pick the one flaw in the setup it would have to be that the Allen Cap Screws supplied by Mag Hy-Tech weren't Stainless Steel... . The Washers Were, but not the screws...
At $230. 00 U. S. I would have liked S. S.

As impressed as I am with the transmission Pan ... I plan to order the Rear Differential cover this week.
It's time to change the gear oil and I'll be dipped if the next cover I put on will need RTV to seal it . . My opinion. . RTV serves a purpose... only when the use of a gasket or "o"-ring is impossible.

As Always. . Opposing Viewpoints Are Welcome.

Larry,
Thanks for the update.

As you can tell from my signature, I am soon going to be the proud owner of a transmission and rear end cover.

It's time to service the transmission and I am tired of oil in my face and the mess on my shop floor!!!! I took advantage of Geno's "TDR Rally Specials" in Columbus and the included gasket and filter.

No more RTV rear end covers without drain plugs for me too. What a pain!

I went to the other desk-MAG-HYTECH -at the TDR nationals. Got the cover, a neat pen and a hat. No filter and gasket though. Ordered a filter from geno's and it is the wrong one. Not gotten here yet and now I know it is wrong- oh well. I do already have the diff cover-makes a lot more sense than the trans cover. But I did want them to match-so I got the trans cover

UPDATE...

I recieved a memo from Mr Roy Rothlisberger of Mag-Hytech on the absence of S. S. Allen Cap screws for the attatchment of the pan to the transmission.

This is a copy of the e-mail.

Hello; Have been out of town for 3 weeks and have missed a lot of the chats.
Andy Perreault sent us an E-mail that you had a question why we do not use SS bolts on the trany pan.
SS and Aluminum are not friendly and where
the threads make contact, electrolyses will eat up the THD in the Aluminum.
This is why we use 4130 allen head cap screws.
In the future we plan to use the same bolts but zinc plated .
SS and steel are compatible and will not become a problem.
If you have any questions please call.
Roy; Mag-Hytec

I would like to point out to everyone that this Company OBVIOUSLY knows their stuff.
A consultation with my "Machinist's Handbook" has confirmed the facts Roy spells out.

I therefore ammend my "Review" of this pan.

Mr. Rothlisberger is obviously quite proud of both his company and products.
He took the time to respond to a percieved shortcoming in a friendly and professional manner.

Thank you for Your Attention.

Larry, The reason why I wrote to Roy was because I wanted to know for myself. I figured there had to be a reason. I've helped Roy at his vendor displays at Columbus and May Madness. I'm no salesman, I'm a truck driver by trade, I just help him because I have a lot of fun at the shows, talking to people. Now I know the reason for not using s. s. bolts, if the question pops up. Roy definitely knows his stuff, you should see his shop! He does a lot of military and aerospace machining jobs. I can guarantee that when his brochure says "Mil-Spec" this and "Aircraft" that, it's for real. One interesting thing Roy told me was that you can put a floor jack under his trans pan and lift the whole truck off the ground. The transmission will break, but not the pan!

Glad to hear I bought some good stuff. I already knew that or I wouldn't have purchased it. Like to hear a confirmation from "the man".

I wondered about the SS cap screws too. Now I know!!

Thanks guys,

Bill

Put the trans pan on- I let it drain for about 3 days. After reading the service manual I bought a gallon of ATF+3, thought I had the exta quart somewhere. 2 more trips later with 2 1/2 gallons in it the level is finally normal. If you let it drain for a long time all sorts on things will need to be refilled ( heat exchanger, 1/2 of a torque converter) Removing the filter helps break the vacuum. The pan is a really nice high quality part. I did not get the filter with it but I got a hat and a pen. Might be a little pricy but my truck thanks me.

I have the rear diff. cover on my 3500. I love it. I agree with the comments concerning the high quality of this product and the ease of installation. Within 30 minutes of installation, I had 3 Dodge owners pull in behind me and ask where I got it, etc. It looks great! Anyone need a slightly used(1000 miles) factory dana80 rear diff. cover? Free to a good home!

- My dana 70 pan went to the trash as well as the trans pan. I don't see putting those pans back on a dodge that I own. I thought about if/when I trade it in. That is years away and the dodge might not even be the same shape or design. In general mechanicals stay the same but I have enough junk.
