How many miles on Amsoil?

What Amsoil gear oil should be used?

Why don't you tell the story correctly when you state testing of lubricants and then compare your LE with another brand?

The SRV wear test paramiters (ASTM D 5707) is a Standard Test Method for measuring friction and wear Properties of LUBRICATING GREASE using a High-Frequency, Leinear-Oscillation (SRV)Test Machine. It has NOTHING to do with GEAR LUBES! GEAR LUBES are tested differently, and YOU should now that!

In general, the SRV (ASTM D 5707)test simulates the conditions found in a universal joint of a vehicle, high frequency, linear-oscillation motion. This is quite dissimilar to most situations where a gear lubricant is used, including the differential of a truck.

The test you should use to compare gear lubes is the 4-Ball ASTM D4172 and not a test that is designed for grease!

Amsoilman, you said it very well, when you decribed the "W" and viscosity. I understood it well and know it well. When I talked about it I tryed to explain it so that everyone would understand it. However we are both right.

As for the SRV testing being only for grease. It is used for a lot of other products, just like the 4-ball test is used for grease, motor oil, gear oil, etc.

When Amsoil tests gear oil on the 4-ball test they modified the test to a higher temp from 75 deg C to 150 deg C and from 1200 rpm to 1800 rpm. when they did this the test is not as accurate as when it is done at the standard temp and rpm.

Just for your information the 4-ball test at the standard paremiters was performed at the same time as the SRV test was. The results were;

Amosil 0. 38 Wear Scar,mm
LE-----0. 32 Wear Scar,mm

This is apples to apples. The smaller wear scar means lower wear.

The SRV test is more differentiating than the 4-ball test is.

Sincerely, Kevin Dinwiddie

amsoilman,
As I understand it, there are many sub-catoagories under the ATSM D-5707 test and that it's not just for grease.

I have sent for more info on the subject and will post these papers later.

Sincerely, Kevin

Well... . Now I'm FULLY CONFUSED!!

So lets begin again...
I also have a 2500 and will be putting on a Mag-Hytech cover... .

If Money were no object... . the truck NEVER tows . . or at least Not regularly...
And the seasonal temps range from -30 to +102 F

What should I pour into the following. .

Rear Diff...
Front Diff... (4X4 2500)
Transfer case...

Automatic transmission. . (Mag Hytec already there)

(Mirror. . Mirror... On the Wall... . Who Has The Best Lube Of Them All??!!/???!?!... . ) #ad

Kevin,
I must ask you, Why does the ASTM list the D-5707 as "Standard Test Method for measuring Friction and Wear Properties of Lubricating Grease Using a High-Frequency, Linear-Oscillation(SRV) Test Machine", while they list the D-4172 (4-ball) as:"Standard Test Method for Preventive Characteristics of Lubricating Fluid"(4-Ball Method)?

I'm with Larry. I just ordered a Mag-hytec rear cover for my Dana 80 today and after talking with him decided to order the LE-607 lube for my front and rear ends and the LE ATF fluid for my transfer case (I'm sticking with the castrol Syntorq for my 5sp). It will ship tomorrow - tell me info info on the pros and cons. Especially on the ATF fluid as there haven't been many posts on that.

After having talked with engineers at LE and with Kevin Dinwiddie (sp?) I've decided to try the LE fluids in the diffs and t-case. I'm going to still run syn-torq in the NV4500 (too chicken to mess with that) and will still be running Valvoline Premium Blue 2000 in the engine. I'll get some oil analysis done on the LE fluids down the road and report back with my results. BTW - the LE 607 does meet API GL-5 specs.

Mag-hytek needs to make a front cover for the Dana 60 to fit our 4x4 Rams. I'm waiting patiently for this to happen!

I talked to them last week about a front Dana 60 cover and they said they are still working on it. They shipped one to Piers (he should have it) that he is going to machine down to fit and then he will ship it back to them to reproduce. They said it will take about 3-4 months after they receive it back. What's the status Piers?
