Making $$ with the big diesel???

Here comes a stupid question... .



I was wondering if there are opportunities around for pulling on the weekends with our trucks. I work a reguar job 7 to 5 during the week and wouldn't mind pulling (no pun intended) in some extra cash on the weekends.



Is anyone out there doing this part-time like that? Does it end up being a worthwhile venture? This is assuming that I don't mind putting miles, because I don't if they're actually money making miles.



FYI, I live about an hour West of Chicago near two major interstates.

I've wondered the same thing. You could do some sort of auto transporting, however you might need a business license and extra insurance though... Dunno, good question.

By the way I try to talk with people that haul rv's and such, sometimes I get an occasional load that way. It's a great way to make a little cash and drive your truck the way it should be driven, with a load.

I too have wondered about that. It seems that towing large boats for a dealer might be worth looking into also.

The price of insurance might negate anything you could make part time.

I have seen large trucks go cheap at local auctions and thought too this might be an avenue to persue. I thought of just buying a couple and renting them out to pay for them, well insurance was WAY more then i ever imagined and put a firm hault to that idea.



The way to make money at it was to have a fleet and get discounts on them. Just one or two and they pushed you out of the profit margin. Ever heard of barrier to entry?... a prime example of keeping the average guy from making money. Welcome to capitalism.

What about an owner-operator cooperative? The big rig owner operators should have some kind of association that buys insurance, etc. at group rates.
