Max safe rpms with stock springs

So I finally got around to finishing (at least of now) my engine upgrades. I wanted to be able to "safely" run the smarty on level 9 everyday. I'm doing a little "testing" and on a WOT run this morning I got the rpms to about 3500 between shifts. Smarty is set on level 9, stock PR, rpms & TM, 2 timing. Shift enhancer on daily. Boost was about 33-34, egts about 1100. So would this be considered "stock" rpms and if not why is it into the red with the smarty set to stock rpms? And the main quesiton, do I need spring? When I did the cam install Piers Harry and PDR said I didn't need springs if I didn't run over stock rpms or excessive boost, so I didn't do them.
 
Smarty will let you rev to about 3,500. I think stock programming is 3200-3300.



I run to 3,500 once in a while and don't have any problems. Just be sure the engine is warm so you don't spit out a freeze plug.
 
You're borderline, but if you don't go over 35# boost your probably ok. Springs are not very expensive now, and IMO are good insurance. There have been reports of piston/valve contact running the factory rev limiter and higher boost.

Eric, that's exactly what I was thinking. I don't want to worry about it and I want to make the motor as reliable as possible. I think I'll get the springs.

Do the higher rate springs cause increase wear on the valve train?



If there was piston-valve contact, how would you know?

If you have valve to piston contact that is hard enough the valve will bend then no longer seal,best case scenario.

Stock Smarty Revo will rev over 3500 with big injectors ;)

Many are starting to find (including myself) that there is much increased wear on the trunions and rockers at elevated horsepower, even with stock valve springs! Several are working on solutions now, and I've got an idea I'm working on too...

If you're fortunate enough to have had minor piston/valve contact, you may see slight imprints of the valves in the top of the piston. Worst case, bent valves, dropped seats, shattered valves, dropped valves all chewed up and mangled and destroyed cylinder walls, etc.

Depends on the boost you are throwing at it, enough boost can float valves on a stock cam grind at 3500 rpm... .
 
I don't real need to rev past stock. It would be nice if the Smarty could be tuned to not rev past stock.

I'd say best case is a bent pushrod...



the valve faces are perpendicular to the piston face.
