Have Trailer Will Travel..... In Style!!!!! Oo. Oo. Oo. Oo. Oo.

Hey Andy... . I've got my stocker out of 'The Express it wasn't slipping when I took it out, but it had a little less fuel than you do now. I had the 370's and a modified slide plate... ... no slippage... even with a 25Ft. Dual Tandem and a 98 CC SB 4x4 on the back. I'd be willing to loan it to ya if you just want to get the truck back on the road for the time being. ;)

Let me know I can bring it Saturday. Just DO NOT buy the clutch you speak off... ... it will be VERY chattery, and will not slip it will either be IN or OUT!

You *might* be able to get by with a Centerforce Dual Friction for a while, but once you go to adding fuel you will need a SBC. :(

I appreciate that Mark. As tempting as that is, I don't want to take advantage of anyones good nature (borrowing shop time, parts, etc. ) Plus, whatever I put in, I want to stay in. For Good.

Yeah, the guy at TN Clutch said it was kind of an off/on clutch, not a lot of give.

I'm leaning more towards putting this one back in... But that will require saving up about a grand for bigger shaft and stuff.

Yeah, you definitely don't want to have to pull that transmission and do a clutch job any more than you have to. I certainly didn't enjoy it, anyway.

Anyway, Andy if you're disgusted with Peter why don't you call one of his vendors and talk with them? Olee Poole is a helluva guy to deal with and he'll talk your head off about diesel trucks and all the parts that he has. He's a SBC dealer and will set you up with the OFE.

Here's the way I see it: You know what clutch you need (13" OFE). You've done your research and most everyone has told you that it's the way to go. So, you're not gonna be buying directly from Peter anyway, so why not just go ahead and get the OFE from Olee, Piers, or whoever? If you do have a problem (which is unlikely) you'll be going through your vendor to get help, right? So Peter has been eliminated from this equation, except for the fact that he designed the clutch several years back.

I got pretty mad at Don M over getting my 5s too, but I wasn't about to tell him to go fly a kite. I said at one point that I wished I didn't have to do business with him but then I changed my mind. Reason being, he makes the finest injector for our trucks - bar none, and I'm afraid that SBC is in the same category as he is.

It's just my opinion, and I hope it helps. Just remember that just because someone is good at building clutches/injectors/turbos doesn't mean they're good with people. And thankfully, you wouldn't have to deal directly with him if you didn't want to.

Good luck!

Hey whiney, I mean Andy,

Why dont you call Mark Craig and see what he could round up for you. I am not sure what he can get, but he will have the answer for you, that I do know. I do know he will be going to SEMA in November, so he might could come up with another source that is better. Wont hurt to ask him anyway.

Just remember, dont burn your bridges, you might need to get home... hahaha

Talk to Meacham and see what he advises and I am sure you will make the right choice. Might be better to wait and get the right part first.

But if you have to throw a clutch through a window call me, I will video it and post it here for all to watch. I got new toys to play with and that would make for a killer video... . :-laf :-laf

Andy,

I would talk to the people at Carolina Clutch. I just got a Luke's in for an 03'HO and the people at TST said they like it better than the South Bend FE. It has dual friction ceremic. They have a conversion 13" with a flywheel for $995.

It has the same HP and Torque Specs as the SB Con FE 13"

Stefan Kondolay got a hold of me the other day (out of the blue). I was kind of suprised that they could get them. If I end up buying a SBC, it'll be from DTT or from Nick.

LuK is supposed to be a good clutch as well. Meacham that 13" they've got looks good. It also appears that they have a dual friction like the OFE. That may be another route.

Hate to break into a good whine ;)

I just wanted to make sure everyone sees the Hohenwald thread

O. K. , back to the clutches since I'll need one too (later)

I'm with Hans... . If you know you want a SB, forget Peter and call Nick or whoever else deals.

Interesting Update.

I called my buddy Michael Watkins in Houston (to check on him, and to request that he put my clutch on his board). He has a Mitchell DD in the shop that needs a rebuild, BUT it has the 1-3/8 input shaft with it. That got the 'ol wheels turning... .

1. I assume that the flywheel for that input shaft has a larger center (1-3/8ths I guess) than the one I have (1-1/4 I guess). So I'd need to make sure that flywheel came with it.
2. I can use the hubs from his worn out friction plates on my "like new" friction plates.
3. Can someone here (TENN) swap the hubs (or put my buttons on his plates) on the friction plates?
4. The price is RIGHT on this deal.

Hmmmm... . I don't want a DD clutch, but this would be a "like new" bullet proof set-up. Since it's not a daily driver, I don't guess it matters too much about how it drives.

Well since this thread doesn't to appear to have any single flow to it, I'll just say hi here.

Greetings! I'm new here and live in Memphis, TN. Andy invited me over and I understand I'm not the only West TN'er around. Good to know. Do ya'll ever do any group meets or anything?

Is everything from this Chapter posted in this one thread? :)

Andy,

Your boy at Tenn Clutch could do it for you. I've dealt with them. They seem to be OK. I talked to him before I bought my Con O. At that time he really didn't seem to know too much about a clutch for our trucks. He called around for me but just never seemed to come up with anything. He did show me several materials that he could put on any hub I wanted. Seems like I bought my Con O from TST. I think it was $50 cheaper than straight from SBC and he didn't charge me shipping like SBC was going to. Good luck.

Jonathan, WELCOME!

Scott

Hey man,

Glad you made it over. Everything is pretty much in this thread unless we have a meeting or t-shirts or something. We are having a meeting in Hohenwald on the 22nd of October. Plan on joining us. It should be a good time. Always is. :)

Rock on Scott. That's awesome news. I may take the clutch I've got back over there and see what he can do for me as far as swapping hubs. I know he can resurface that flywheel. Not that it needs it though.

One other item of note. On this 96, when I turn the key to start, it'll sit there dead for about 3 seconds, then crank and fire up. Any ideas why the delay?

Welcome Jonathan!!!

Andy, I sure wish I could offer some advice, but all I can say is good luck fixin' it and ya'll keep talking about it cause I am learning with every reply!!! :) Soaking it up like a sponge Oo.

Electrical Problems

Well guys I've some some sort of electrical problem that is draining my batteries within about 24 hours. I let the truck sit for 7-8 days and they were drained enough that it wouldn't start when I got in it. I started it 3 times the next day but then I let it sit for about a day and a half. Went out there today and had to get jumped-off again. :(

I've only had the Optimas about 6 months so I went to Advance here in Memphis and they showed that the batteries were good and the alternator was doing what it should too.

So I'm afraid that I've got something that is pulling power from these batteries when I'm not using the truck. I talked to Corn this afternoon and of course they couldn't really tell me much without looking at it but he did say that some of those battery testers won't work with the gel-cell batteries.

I've got the batteries disconnected right now so if anything is trying to pull from them, hopefully they won't be drained the next time I get in it. I won't be back in Mid-Tenn for another 2 weeks so maybe I can make it until then and then have Meacham/Corn take a look at it.

I'm still planning on coming to the pull but if the truck won't start Saturday with the batteries being disconnected for 2 days, I probably won't chance it. Apparently, they were charged when I disconnected them. I have no idea what's going on.

Any advice or suggestions?

Gap - what time do you want me to show up at Red's place if I can come?

Last time (only time) my batteries drained down, my hood-light had dropped out of the plastic snaps and was hangin by the wire - light stayed on when the hood was down!

... Still running the original pair of batteries!

JonathanBurk - Welcome to the group. I live close to Memphis; let's get together sometime.

I'm heading out of here tonight to go catch a flight out of Little Rock (it's a bunch cheaper) in the morning to go to the AIRSHO 2005 in Midland, TX, participate in some CAF events, then fly the B-24 back to Little Rock for the LRAFB Air Show next weekend.

I'll try to catch up on this diesel-truck stuff when I get both feet back on the ground! :D

Hmmm... . I'm pretty sure that my hood light was going off but I think I'll go check that!

Oh yeah, JonathanBurk - I forgot to mention that I'm currently living in Memphis going to school (home is in Mid-Tenn though). ProspectorTim and I are the only ones living relatively close to or in Memphis that I know of. We'll have to get together sometime for lunch, breakfast, or coffee or something when Tim gets settled down.

Leave it to the boss to throw a wrench in my plans. :rolleyes: :-{}

I *may* have to work my usual 1/2 day on Saturday, even though its not my rotational Saturday. See we had inventory this past Saturday so everybody had to work, but it was my normal Sat. Co-workers were saying today boss man was gonna switch rotation because they would be working 3 Sat's in a row if he didnt. :{ :{ :{

That means bunch 'o stuff gets sped up tomorrow. I have to go pull the tires off Dilberts DOS Pherd in his driveway, go borrow my tractor weights, and I have to mock up and weld my suspension blocks (may not have time  ) Shay and I STILL need to test his trailer wiring. AAARRRGGGGHHHHH!

If I do have to work fella's that means I won't get off till Noon. I will have my truck ready to roll up on the trailer, so all I have to do is meet Shay somehwere like... say Wally Hell parking lot  :-laf drive up on the trailer, strap it down, and take off. If y'all can we'd apprecaite y'all waiting on us so we can convoy down together. Yeah Gap posted the directions, but I think it would just look BAD@$$ if we had a line of Dodges going down the interstate and Shay & us bringing up the rear with my truck on the trailer. Even if y'all just wait long enough for us to pull up and we turn right around and leave that's fine. Just not sure exactly when we'll get there sometime probably around 1-1:30PM.
