Without going into all the details, a fairing will only help if it extends most of the width of the trailer, and the gap between it and the trailer is fairly small. Look at big trucks.
Most of the spoilers I say on pickups are far to small to help with much other than reducing the number of bugs on the nose of the trailer.
BTW, I took my new '07 out for the first time with our 30 ft horse trailer with living quarters. I think it's around 9,000 empty. I pulled a couple of hills (mountains to you folks on the East Coast) and the overhead read 9. 8 when I returned home. Of course, it is a new truck with 1,000 miles on the odometer, and I was running up the hills at 70 MPH locked up in fourth gear. Spinning about 2,900 RPM up the hill was sure to hurt the economy.
