Mobil 1 oil OK or what??

In previous discussions about using Mobil 1 oil in our CTD's it had been stated NOT to use it as it did not meet diesel use criteria (no "C" in donut rating). Issue 47, pg. 94 of Jim Anderson's Idle Clatter column says Mobil 1 now has an oil approved for diesel use (a 5W-40) . After going to my local auto parts store, I noticed other types of Mobil 1 approved for diesel use, although not CI-4, they were CF rated (a 5-30 oil). Does this mean I can "safely" use this in my '97 CTD?? Thanks, John

The Mobil brand synthetic oils that are blended for service in our diesels are:



Mobil Delvac 1



Mobil 1 Truck and SUV (same as Delvac 1 in consumer-oriented packaging)

The CF rating for diesel oils is somewhat old. I know that my '02 specs CH-4.



I'd actually encourage the use of a CI-4+ petroleum oil (DELO 400, DELVAC 1300, or Rotella) over even a Synthetic rated only CF.



Oil technology has advanced quite significantly, even recently. The dino stuff sold today is probably as good as synthetics were 15 years ago. Though they still have a petro base stock, the superior additive chemistry helps to offset that.



If you want a 30 Wt oil, then Delo 400 and Rotella are available as 10W-30s, if I'm not mistaken. Make sure you use a multigrade, not a straight SAE 30 or SAE 40 or what have you.



I've found that a synthetic or synthetic blend works well in the cold weather or if you run in extreme heat. If you don't see temperature extremes in the way you use your truck, then synthetic might not be worthwhile for you.



If you want to run a synthetic, I'd recommend you check out the 15W-40 synthetic diesel oils made by Redline Oil and Royal Purple. Amsoil's 15W-40 HD Diesel and Marine is also supposed to be pretty good.



I've found that as little as 33% synthetic gives a noticeable improvement in cold cranking and oil pressure rise. If you're considering blending your own, then that may help ya

I would like to give the 5w40 a try. Should flow better and lubricate faster on start ups, provide more protection to the turbo on hot shut downs.

I found synthetics are more slippery when I changed over on a motorcycle I race. I had to turn down the idle speed, not allot but it was noticeable.

I've been using Amsoil since 25K was on the truck, it now has 91K. I'm looking for something easier to find as Mobil 1 is all over the place. So isn't Walmart, so I'll look there. I just needed 2 qts. for refill before the next O/C. That's why I was wondering about the other Mobil 1's. I'll use the 5-40 for the next O/C. Thanks

I would not "blend" any "synthetic" oil with a petrolium oil to come up with something you may think is better!



All oil Companies have different formulas that make up their oils, and they spend MILLIONS of Dollars to get them formulated to "meet" the minimum requirements of the API and SAE specs for that particular oil. When you add any other additive or another oil, you can upset the chemical balance of that oil. and cause the oil to not function the way it was formulated to do.

The Valvoline PB Extreme is not in the same class of synthetics as Redline, Royal Purple, Amsoil, and Mobil 1. It is still a very good oil but just be sure you are not paying too much for it. It should be a bit less than the "true" synthetic oils. Group III synthetics (like the Valvoline PB Extreme) should be around $4/quart.

I just wanted information about the newer Mobil 1's. As for Amsoil to the door, yea, but at almost $9. 00/qt. for 2 qts. to hold me til the next O/C, or another way to put it- $18. 00 for less than 1500 mi. use. Mobil 1, @ about $4. 75/qt. is cheaper for my purposes. I'm NOT looking to debate the differences between Amsoil and other oils, I just want to make sure I can use this Mobil 1 safely for my intended purposes. And if it is as good as advertised, maybe try it on the next O/C.

As long as it's API licensed for CI-4 it's Cummins approved. Mobil 1 Truck/SUV and Delvac 1 5w40 synthetics are both api licensed, as is premium blue extreme. However premium blue extreme isn't of quite the same quality, it's a group 3 based synthetic - which starts from petroleum basestocks. The Delvac 1, Redline, and Amsoil are all group 4 synthetics - which start from higher quality synthetic basestocks.

Delo 400 is pretty cheap at Wallyworld. I just switched to it at 112K after running Delvac 1 for the last 80K miles. Got tired of paying the big bucks and the temps around here are 40 lows winter to 90 highs summer, so what the heck.

To Jeff Knight, no apologies needed, as this is almost what I wanted, discussion about the topic. To Amsoilman, I am not debating the differences of Amsoil and Mobil 1. My truck was low on oil, and I needed to refill it. I do not want to spend almost $20. 00 for 2 qts. of oil that is only going to be dumped out in about 1500 miles. I do not have Amsoil shipped to the door, I get it at a business establishment (former TDR advertiser) about 90 min. away ( one way). I,m getting tired of traveling 3 hrs just for oil. If I can find something as good or almost as good and cheaper and easier, then I'll try it. My understanding is not everyone uses Amsoil. What I DO want is serious discussion if this oil is OK for my truck. I believe I've received that answer. Thanks to all...
