A couple of weeks ago a half dozen or so cases of Mobil 1 15-40

sort of "fell" into my lap. What i was wondering if this oil is any good? My old Tech school teacher was an amsoil man and said it was the only thing he would put into his machines next to amsoil.

I dont want this thread to decline into a superior or inferior match i would just like to know if it a good oil, period. Thanks in advance, aloha!

Is it 15W-50, not 15W-40? I run the 15W-50 in my 4stroke dirtbikes - it doesn't have the additives that mess up a wet clutch.

Mobil makes a 15W-50 racing formulation that is probably ok to use in the Cummins as long as you don't go more than maybe 3000 miles before changing. It is not CH-4 rated, so it is not designed to hold soot. But the specs for this oil are not otherwise too bad for a diesel. Some folks have used it in VW TDIs. But it doesn't hold up very well. Use Delvac if you want to use a Mobil product. Any CH-4 rated oil, conventional or synthetic, would be a much better choice than Mobil 1.

The Mobil 1 is as good an oil as you will find for the applications it is rated for, all gas and light duty diesel. You can run it in your CTD for short periods as mentioned. I would problably trade it 2 for 1 to someone for some Delvac 1 or 1-2 for some Rotella or Delo since I do not have a gasser worthy of the Mobil 1.

Personally I would not run it in my CTD, it will not suspend the soot and the detergency is not nearly as high as a heavy duty diesel oil. If you have a good gasser in the stable too use it, you can also extend drain intervals considerably with analysis if that is something you are comfortable with.

Thanks

Appreciate the speedy reply guys. I guess it will have to go in the old inboard gas boat motors. Nice to see there was no arguing over brands too. Aloha
