This is my first post on TDR but I've been a loyal reader for afew months. All I can say is ,"a bunch of cummins fanatics , I'm in the right place!" Although my current ride is not my first diesel, it is the first one I've had problems with. At this time it is currently in a local DC shop with water/antifreeze in the oil,the dealer said they think its a cracked head but also feel a short block is in order. What I want to know is has anyone else had or heard of anything like this, the truck only has 40,000mi. on it and has had a easy life , am I the only one with this problem? Any info would be appriciated

mm,I've heard of more cases of water in the oil comeing from a leaking oil cooler than from cracked heads. I have a feeling that your dealer doesn't know diesels that well. If you need to show them where it is it's behind the oil filter mount.
Welcome to the TDR and good luck

illflem is right. The cooler should have been their first suggestion. You better find another place to have it worked on. It sounds like they don't know Cummins engines.

Thanks for the info, the only reason it went to DC is it's still under factory warranty and if they want to put a new engine in it far be it from me to stop them. especially since I've only got 3 months left.

Well if it is the oil cooler leaking changing the block(new engine) won't solve the problem-they don't change that when they do the engine. Watch it after you get the truck back.

Last year I worked on a "97" with about the same milage, it had anti-freeze in the oil, that turned out to be a cracked head.
Every engine I've seen with an oil cooler leak always had oil in the radiator and in the over-flow tank.
