Hello all, I've just got back into the whole Cummins thing. I recently bought a 2004 4x4 2500 Laramie w/ NV5600. Here is a question I haven't completely been able to answer by searching. The truck I bought has a build date of 1/04. This truck should have a 600 in it, correct? I have not actually taken delivery of this truck yet but the dealer says it has the 555 in it. Is this possible? I thought all trucks starting 1/04 had the 600 in them. Can someone please shed some light on this. Thanks

Hi Reyberg. . . yes if it has a build date of Jan '04 it would be the 600. You could have them check the door sticker on the truck. It will say "Build date" such as Jan 04, but there is a 6-digit MDH number that is very specific. It will read something like 010416 (the first 2 digits are month, next two are the day, and last two are the hour the truck rolls off the assembly line). So MDH of 010416 means it rolled off the line Jan 4th at 1600 hours (4pm).

The next clarifier would be to look at the engine sticker on the valve cover. It shows the horsepower. . . 305 is the 555 motor, 325hp is the 600.

Thank you this clears up everything. Apparently the dealer told me wrong. the MDH is 011303. So it is a 2004. Thanks again.

It's an '04. 5, built Jan 13, 2004 at 3 am ;)

I don't think there's a 03. 5 since the trucks didn't go through any significant changes in the '03 model year like they did in '04.

reyburg one thing to keep in mind. . . when the 600s came out there were quite a few injector issues along with cold idle smoke, misfiring, etc. Software flashes and injectors solved the issues, so if you have any of these press the dealer to give you the latest updates.

I misread the MDH, but there ARE a '03. 5's , mine is and the difference is there is the HO 48RE auto, prior to that, the autos were SO's The CPL is different from '03 to '03. 5 even with the manuals.
