how much hp were you running on the dyno, and what were you doing when this happened BBD

I did 865 rwhp last year at Ken Imler's that was with the plate slid half way back and a 13% meth/water mix also before the larger sticks fuel lines bumped timming and fass as well.

I was sled pulling, we actully hurt the motor the second pull of the year and were quit surprised she made it an additional 6 more pulls on 5 cyclinders :-laf it was evedent it was hurt the rest of the season as it was down on power big time. We had a pull only an hour way so I layed into for good and didn't let up, she gave way and was still runing, drove it on the trailer and we still had the second longest hook behind a big white Ford.

Nice pics Jim :D

Those pictures must be photoshopped because there is no way those are pictures of the mighty Cummins. A Cummins can make 1500 hp with all stock internals.

It really isn't that bad! 4 bent valves and push rods, no piston damage that I can tell as you can wipe the impressions off with your finger. I guess it pays to have big piston to valve clearance.

865 hp ---4 years later---Id say they can take alot more than most others out there.

It is all good I think Tomac is the only guy that has been able to keep his DMAX together at around the 700HP mark. I think the other DMAXs are puking at 700HP with in weeks, not years.

the cylinder obviously wasn't windowed for the 5-6 pulls you did after you knew the engine was "hurt"

why keep pounding on a $20k shortblock when it's in need of attention? I could see gambling if one pull could possibly pay for a new short block, but I don't think the purses in your class are THAT high, are they?

prime example why spares are essential for competition... even if it's just a stock short block w/ milled pistons. something to keep you in the game while you inspect/protect your high dollar mill

MTomac, I re-read this thread up until your post--not 1 neg. comment about the d max, and just like the BBD and his break down, you too will break down.

If you look at the join dates, BBD has been around here since 2000. You show up on the boards in 2006. BBD had more than likely 4 times the the competition hrs on his Dodge CTD than you have on your d max. Let's see where you are at in 4 years.

I am not bad-mouthing your D max. You have an obvious bone to pick with the Cummins people. Also, you have done a great deal of research and have taken the D max to places it was not meant to go. Your formula for high hp and torque works, and good for you. BBD was and is an Icon here and admired on tdr, and I am sure that when your D max finally throws the rod or melts down, BBD will have more class than to post one-line negative comments about your d max. My apologies in advance for offending you.

Well put...

Not sure why it bugs you, but here goes my thinking. I like to do motor modifications every two years as I can’t afford to do them every year, so with that being said the motor was coming out this winter and plans were to go much further with it adding more recent then four year old technologies i. e. Aries pistons, fire rings, 14mm studs, Schied cam, skip the intercooler etc…. The motor was still performing however not as strong as usual. If I were to pull the motor in the middle of season to repair it to somewhat the same condition, as we didn’t have the stuff mentioned above or time, I would have missed more then half of the pull season. Unlike you guy’s out East who have been pulling way longer, I don’t have access to a shop locally here that deals with the 5. 9 at this level of performance hence I would have burnt up leave to take it to a shop that could do the work. Trust me I weighed the risk of giving up the block but with saving the money for the more radical mods, time down to rebuild to same conditions, and burning leave I was prepared to build a new motor from scratch. All in all, it didn’t make sense to me to dump the money right then into a rebuild that would leave it in the same condition, knowing full well that I was going to be pulling the motor out after 6 or 7 pulls to go more extreme. Does that make sense ?

JBrewton: a mere $25K

Chris, thanks for the kind words. I think Mike was using this thread to take a jab at some Cummins folks that were ribbing him early in another thread about the Duramax :-laf I certainly didn't take it to hart.

Regards,

BBD
