What is with the stationary regen?

Yes I was at Ft Rucker, errr Novosel, for the C-12 course. Fantastic course.

I like to do a stationary regen annually, I think they do a better job of cleaning the DPF since they are longer than a standard active regen. My theory is that it’s a once a year deep cleaning, but I have nothing to back that up.

I think I'm going to try out the stationary de-soot this time around, guess I need to get the bypass cable installed and figure out AlphaOBD.. I will be doing the 30k service for the AISIN as well next month

I swapped the DRL’s to the turn signal lights. I like the amber and white contrast, for now. I’ll see how it looks after a few days.

The kids were all in agreement that it looks better than the low beams as DRL’s.

Had some time today so I went to work servicing the rig.

I started off by going for a drive to warm it up, then initiated a stationary regen with my JScan (I also have AlfaOBD, but JScan is easier on my iPhone). Once it was running I unplugged the JScan and plugged the CTS3 back in to watch the temps. What I noticed is that it took a while to heat the DPF up and it didn’t last as long as the 2018 did. Not sure if that’s programming differences or the fact that I stated yesterday with an active regen and then 7 hours of towing the 5th wheel and the DPF was pretty clean. On the 2018 I would splash the radiator with water to help keep ECT’s down, and I didn’t have to do that with the 2022. At 207° the fan would ramp up and the ECT’s would drop to 195° ish. It completed it about 35 minutes, and it also has a fast idle cooldown period that I don’t remember the 2018 having. I’m still not sure if it’s beneficial or not, but it can’t hurt.

After the regen completed I went and fueled up for my records, then pulled it into the shop to let the motor cool enough to work on.

I started with the rear differential, that R&P is massive!! Holy cow. The fluid was in better shape than the OEM fluid was on the 2018’s first change, but still quite metallic from breakin. The magnet wasn’t too bad thou. Pretty easy change overall and all looks good.

I then moved onto draining the engine oil, nothing fancy here. Same old oil change procedure as always, and the filter isn’t hard to get to.

The fuel filters gave me a little work thou. The 28mm socket from Geno’s is awesome, if you don’t have one for your 19+ the get one. I thought the dog bone was slick for my 2018, but this is better. Getting the engine mounted fuel filter out is another story, I ended up taking it out the bottom. The rear is better than the canister filters on the 13-18’s, and I was able to get a lot more fuel to drain out of it and didn’t make a mess opening it up. It’s a slow process that I repeated 3 or 4 times, but the fuel from the engine filter and all the lines drained out. Filters looked good for having burned 1071 gallons of fuel in the 13,746 miles.

The screws on the air filter box feel like they take more torque than they should, but oh well. Filter is changes and the intake of the turbo was inspected and all is well. The dirty filter was much heavier than it’s replacement. There were fewer bugs in the airbox than the 2018, but I think more dust is injected with the 19+ intake.

Without a lift the front diff service isn’t much fun. I ended up using a floor jack on my front receiver to gain some clearance. The front fluid was much cleaner than the rear, but that’s to be expected.

Instead of following the recommendation of 78 months/97,500 miles for a drain and flush on the PS fluid I decided I’ll do a reservoir fluid swap at each oil change. I was able to suck about 10oz out and it looked/smelled slightly burnt already.

I’ve got 3K miles on the Thuren anti sway-bar so I greased it. Not sure how often I’ll need to do that going forward.

We spent the weekend in Yellowstone. Such a great time. Truck did awesome, as expected, and pulled pretty good mileage. On the way over we had a tailwind and got 10.5 mpg despite the overall climb of 2K feet to the first fuel stop. We camped at Canyon Campground in the park, which is our favorite park campground. The EVIC said 19.5 mpg after 400 miles of cruising around the park. The tank home was 9.8 mpg, but also included the stationary regen fuel so we likely got 10.0-10.1, which is okay since the headwind was fierce. The EVIC said 6-7 mpg at times on flat ground at 70. Sure do love the 50 gallon tank.

I was doing some things with AlfaOBD on dads truck yesterday (fogs w/ highs, gear display, TPIS to TPMS), and decided to give TPIS to TPMS a try on my truck.

I’ve been hesitant in the past because I’m constant changing tire pressure based on my driving load and want the TPMS setting to be useful, not 35 psi when I’m at 80 for the load. I also have JScan on my phone, which is easier for me to use quickly so I’m going to try this out and see if I like it. It will definitely be enabled when the wife takes the truck on road trips.

want the TPMS setting to be useful, not 35 psi when I’m at 80 for the load.

I would take a warning at 40 PSI. Slow leaks are not going to get caught before possible overload tire heat damage, but, larger holes may give one enough warning to get stopped before the failing tire does damage while coming apart from "0" PSI.

The exhaust brake being on didn't make it any more exciting to stop. No fishtailing nothing. Just a "What is that noise" and a quick answer of debris in the mirror.

I hit a little but of black ice a couple weeks ago and decided I was done with the Trashforce tires, they really are junk. It’s embarrassing that Ram uses them. My wife’s Gladiator came with Falken Wildpeak A/T’s that have a 3PMSF rating. Why can’t a Ram HD do the same?!

Anyhow I had a set of the new Goodyear Duratrac RT-LT’s installed in the stock LT285/60R20 size. I had wanted to go LT285/65R20 but decided to go with the stock size for two reasons, one maxcare has verbiage about not covering oversized tires and I’ve already lifted my 5th wheel and it’s just barely level. I’m sure maxcare wouldn’t be an issue with such a small size change, but I done want to deal with any potential issues.

The Duratrac’s are sweet! Very happy so far.

I also recently installed a set of Mopar wind deflectors.

One wants predictability. To that end the confidence or inspiration of right tires cannot be overstated. It gets past words.

As only steering leads braking in importance in what matters for an automobile, right tires isn’t ever too expensive given proper analysis of need.

The pleasure of learning how they accept power while maintaining tractive force (which is also body roll) is one’s hat tip to the engineers involved.

So are the GY Duratrac's noisy? The GY's are a good looking tire. I sometimes wind down my window while in traffic to see if other trucks tires are noisy on the highway. The GY's seemed loud to me. It's always a compromise with traction vs noise vs comfort vs etc......

I had Duratracs on my Power Wagon and I didn't find them objectionable noise wise.

They are noisier than the oem tires for sure, mine came with the transforce which were pathetic. For me personally they are on the higher end of noise I am willing to put up with but they are not obnoxiously loud, there are certainly louder tires out there for sure. However I am a I like it quiet kind of guy. Years ago I ran Toyo M55's on my 01 those dang things while great tires were noisy even on dirt/gravel roads.

This is a new slightly less aggressive Duratrac, the RT. They have a 50K mile warranty and are 3PMSF rated.

So far they are as quiet as the transforce and just as smooth, just have much better grip.

How worn were they? I hit the wear bars before 20K miles. Next new one make sure the dealer keeps em and ride off the lot on good rubber instead!
