Tow haul mode will shift into 6th gear when there's no load demand. My rig weighs 15k. And yes, it's a dually. Don't recall the RPM's but I don't pull past 65 MPH.

Yes, but if it is constantly shifting that will completely mess up the efficiency. That is why the rpms are critical, you frequently get better efficiency running at higher rpm constantly than you will with it constantly hunting for a gear on every grade and slope bouncing the rpms. You need to keep the rpms up enough it is on the front side of the TQ curve so every grade does not ramp the load too high.

Need to know your terrain also and adjust accordingly. You can run almost coast to coast on I10 and I20 on CC and not see as much difference as you would on I40 or I70 or I90. On the rolling terrain you shut off the cruise and find a gear\speed that gives the least drop with a steady pedal. I have seen almost 3 mpg difference driving rather thna autopilot.

Even in the south this time of year temps are not conducive for efficiency, it will likely change as ambient rises.

Best attribute of the Aisin in TH mode it never hunts gears even on steep grades and with CC on. Biggest part of success is programming in the Max Tow pkg IMHO.

Yep, the last thing in the whole world I thought I would ever do is tow heavy in serious grades with cruise control on. Amazing! And with my chip, looks to be even better to match hp and nearly tq with the HO pickups. The 4.88s are really great accelerating with that hp/tq. I can't keep from smiling. Just drove thru Houston traffic on the way to Galveston. Really nice to have a responsive throttle while navigating thru 5 lane insanity.

Like every other Texan, I love my truck and my beer. I alternate the order, as necessary.

Cheer and beers,

Ron
