Well guys,

It just keeps getting worse and worse. I pulled my head last night to install the new head gasket. Problem was, the gasket didn't look too bad.

I did some touch up porting last night and got up early this morning to clean and reassemble everything. That's when I found the damage. Looks like something found its way into the #6 combustion chamber. Looks like a circular object from the impressions on the head. The head will have to be resurfaced due to the damage. The valve seats don't look good either. Then I rotated the engine over to bring the #6 piston to the top. WOW. I can't even describe it. I'll post some pictures later, but something definately destroyed the top of the piston.

I can't figure out what slipped past the intake valve and did so much damage. This probably had something to do with my broken HX-40. I remember a few weeks ago I started my truck one morning and the motor seemed to knock loudly for the first few minutes. It quit once I started driving so I forgot about it. That was the day before my HX-40 broke. I hadn't done any engine work prior to that morning either. ???

Weird.

But with 195,000 hard miles, I'm sure my engine could use a rebuild anyways. This just gives me an excuse to do it.

scrap metal

Just a thought is there any more metal in the inner cooler. I have seen the results of metal that has gone into the turbo and if all of it is not out then you can heve more trouble later on.

Bob, STOP THAT!

Chris, that really sucks man. If I can do anything for ya, I'm just a couple of hours away. Let me know, don't know how much help I could be, but if you need it, then I'm willing.

Bob,

Do NOT post that link again! I had to vote, and give it a one because it is so awful. Prime example of why we need gauges. Now I have to go look at GP to get my mind off of it. :D

That Bites!!!

I would bet you could swap out that piston and hone the cyinder in the truck and everything would be fine.

Give HVAC a call about work in the truck. He has a setup to O-ring the cylinders in the truck, which isn't a bad idea if you already have it off.

I have to admit, freshening up the bearings, rings, and all would be nice.

It almost had to be a Valve Seat failure. Can`t imagine anything (except something very small) getting through the tubes of the cooler then up vertical 20 inches to the intake. But anything is possible.

Here are some pictures fellas. Nasty stuff. I have to admit I wish it were someone else's motor. :)

Notice the circle pattern everywhere. I don't think this is an abuse issue, it looks like a foreign object issue.

Notice the huge gash on the lower right hand portion of the piston.

Also, I took my die grinder to the surface of the piston and found that parts of the metal object were actually still stuck into the top of the piston. When you scratch the piston, it leaves a light gray almost dusty mark, but the steel chunks looked shiny like a new machined piece. I had to dig about 1/8" down to get all the steel out.

It's hard to believe this engine was still putting out over 400 HP when I took it apart.

I can't wait to see what it'll do on all 6 cylinders. :)

I drove right by Willis today on my way back home. I should have stopped by and seen the carnage.

You still gonna come up to Dallas?

Dude, I cant believe what I am seeing. What a mess.

You and Cord can sure tear some I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER up.

I'd just replace the piston, hone the cylinder, and put 'er back together. Would there be any problems with that? Is there any damage to the cylinder itself ie scored or some other compression hindering wound? :{ :{

Let me know how much this costs you. I'd like to have an estimated cost should I ever total my engine, and decide to fix it myself.

Thanks

The compression hindering wouds are the two valves that have pitted seats and don't seal well.

If I pull the motor to replace a piston, I'm going to replace all of them and completely rebuild it. You have to remember my engine has 195,000 hard miles. The knocking each morning are signs that the bearings would enjoy being replaced as well. :)

Don,

I'm still coming to Dallas. I want to see what you've learned about injectors since our last dyno. Now the pressure is on you to fend off the Fords and all their propane tanks. :) A Dodge HAS TO win this event. My truck is crippled, Cord isn't bringing his, it's up to you. I guess next in line was Deezul1, but I don't think he's done anything since then other than a few clutch swaps. :)

-Chris

Chris, bring me up your Nitrous kit and spray a little in my air intake and the Fords will surely fall.

I have learned alot about injectors..... maybe a little too much:D

My poor clutch is gonna hurt after Sat.

Wow Chris that is really something, what a shame. Any idea why the two major areas of the impact pattern are almost opposite of each other? It seems 2 areas are pretty hard hit and the rest almost nothing. If theres anything I can do let me know. No I dont have a spare Joe D cam laying around.

Strick 9, was your engine that clean inside or did you polish it up before taking the pictures?? I am curious to know how the other cylinder walls looked after so many hard miles. Any signs of ring wear or ridge at the tops of the cylinders?

Personally if all the other cylinders looked great I'd just replace the one like CAnderson mentioned. I haven't looked but is there no way to remove the pan with the engine in place and R&R the piston? You are probably right though the bearing might have taken a beating then you're dealing with potential rod journal issues.

Kwikkurt or one of his buddies sucked something into their engine and pounded up a piston. I don't know if you saw that post (one of the long B1 threads) but they just removed the piston, hammered and filed it smooth then put it back in again

Vaughn, KwiKurt didn't remove the piston, he took a grinder and smoothed up the piston top and head and put it back together. Its a major job to remove the pan.
