I'm not much of a motor head, but it looks like the crispy cream calender girls danced on that thing with their stiledo heals on! Sure looks bad.

Don M

You and Cord can sure tear some I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER up.

I'm sorry Chris but that's a damn funny post..... still laughing my a$$ off.

Man I hate to see that but it is nice to get to see it, Man I've seen dropped valves that didn't make that much damage..... If that was a gasser it would have taken the block out.

Vaughn,

I ran over the piston with a wire brush to make the uglyness stand out. Here's another picture that shows the crosshatching on #5 and the dirty block.

There's no ridges on the cylinders, but the pistons are a little loose (worn rings). You can actually shake them all back and forth. When we had cumminsgetme's head off all his pistons were TIGHT even though he has more miles than me.

i guess the perpetrator was not found?

how do you think it got past the heater grids?

come on fess up, what did you drop in there un-knowingly while you had the intake open? :D

it realy doesnt look that bad. i would vote for an in-truck repair. but hey, mine only has 228000 on it.

Thinking back to the days when I pulled my grid heater out of my manifold I recall some lock and flat washers about that size that were on the bottom of the bolts that retain the grids in place.

Im thinking out loud here... . but it looks like someone yanked the grid heater out and may have left behind some parts. )-;

I nearly did the same thing.

Grid heaters... who needs 'em in South Texas?

I was thinkin the same thing John. Of course, those guys never run with high EGT's. They are real careful about that. :D

It is common to be able to rock the pistons. There is very little skirt below the pin, and the top is cut back so it won't scuff so much. Clearance often feels like a bunch, maybe 10 thou. If you can get the oil pan off, pull #6. If the rod is straight (probably is), consider a new rod bearing and a piston. I might have some stuff laying around you can use.

Chris, I have a complete engine in my garage if you need parts.

Man, I gotta get going again, I'm not even mentioned with the high HP guys anymore:(

take the thing and run man.....

Chris,

I would take Mike's offer on this and swipe a piston and some valves when he is not looking. I am going to swipe a turbo from him in a couple of weeks, just don't tell him yet. :D

Mike,

You were a high hp guy? ;) :p

Chris. . sounds to me like it is time to Bore and Stroke the Mighty Cummins... :D :D haha. . but seriously. . if you had a spare engine you could do it. . but it takes a lot of time to get everything right. . (Lots of grinding, and milling. ) The most difficult thing is getting the proper compression ratio when it comes to stroking the engine. . (especially in the diesel. ) Lots of little things have to be done. . (grinding here. . grinding there. . ). . also. . I do not remember how close to the top of the piston the ring is located. . as with an added stroke, the piston will have to be milled or a different piston or rod be used. . It all depends on how much you want/can aford to spend... In tractor pulling we call it the Cubic Dollar theory. . (the more $$$$ U got the more CID's you can buy. ) Another one of my favorite quote's. . There's no replacement for dispacement... . (Except drugs. . :D :D  LP & NOS)

I do have a spare piston you can use Chris. . lol... Not sure how you will get this in. . but its worth a shot. . lol. . and this is one of my Little pistons. . (I think it would be worth a little more than 30-40 Hp:rolleyes: ) only 6. 25 bore. . (that makes close to 250cid in just one hole.

hahaa. . :--) :--) :D :D Just not sure it will fit. . :{ like I said. . a little grinding here. . a little grinding there... and a Super BFH it just might fit. . :p :p Oo.

Rick. . find someone that is into restoring, old John Deere's, and get an old piston from them, and polish it. Most of the factory pistons were cast, the later, and aftermarket pistons are Aluminum. A new piston could run you as high as $350-400 for just one pistons. . (Usually in the 400-500 for a set. . (that is for only 2 pistons in a set) I know there are lots of restorer/tractor pullers in your area, just have to find one...
