When one compares the additional marginal wheel weight and marginal tire weight increases in regards to going from 17” assemblies to 19.5” assemblies.....be glad you have the 17” versions. The increase in rolling resistance and additional rotating mass are not positive factors in regards to achieving good fuel economy.

With that being said.....for my commercial use of the truck, I really like my 19.5’s.

Also.....price out dismounting 6, remounting 6, and balancing 6 19.5” tires and wheels in your area. It ran me $380.52 when I installed my new Firestones back this April or so.

I bet they would last substantially longer??? I do agree with the downsides you pointed out, though.

Continentals went 128k miles....had a little life left, but didn’t want to push them down too low. Running commercially, I cannot go less than 2/32nds on drives and 4/32nds on steers.

With that being said.......since you’re running 17’s on the 3500, all I can say is Bridgestone for the win...

I received 154k miles out of them.....commercially.

In the Cummins Forum post, you worried about the weght of the Bridgestone Duravis tires, that just means they are of better material and construction. I'm going to go with the Duravis tires from Michilens I currently run, when needed.

How about a stroll ‘round the barn? Relating to tire failures and safety?
My buddy sent me this yesterday. I have no info other than what can be gleaned from the pictures.
It appears to me that he was running recaps (I’ve been seeing these pop up on the inter web as “reconditioned” tires) all around, and let loose a road gater on the steer.
Thoughts?

Retreads don't explain the front wheel AND the entire rear axle coming off.
Either that truck should have been condemned long ago or someones shade tree mechanics license needs revoked :D
Wonder if there was a simultaneous front blowout and a catastrophic cardan joint failure at the transfer case causing this? Wayne M. did not mention any trailer accompanying the truck.

My guess is the left tire lost the tread, that tossed him into the left guard rail and ripped the wheel off. The same guard rail then ripped the axle off after blowing out the tire. The pieces and parts were probably placed where they are, to clear the roadway.

I reached out to my friend to see if the location is available.
It’s pretty obvious that the front tire unraveled, got jammed up, tore the whole wheel/ hub off, possibly the rear tire running over the gater, etc. the body damage is quite telling!
I don’t know about the vehicle inspection laws in VA, but I can guarantee that recaps are illegal on the steer.

EDIT—
It was 81 in VA.
Ok, the stroll ‘round the barn is over.

If we’re going to derail, let’s at least get back on track with accurate info.

Might want to recheck your laws.

They are illegal on the steers of busses, and not recommended for anything else with a rating per tire of 4920lbs or less. Not recommended does not make it illegal.

You’ll want to refresh with 49 CFR 393.75.

State laws may vary, so really only federal laws apply as a blanket statement.
