John, I am a certified NYS inspector for all vehicles except motorcycles. Any recap is reason for rejection on the steer.

Maybe in New York, but not a Federal law

Your statement was absolute, not NY specific.

So don’t make blanket statements unless you have federal laws to back them up. Every state will have laws that other states don’t, doesn’t make it absolute for everyone.

State laws may vary, so really only federal laws apply as a blanket statement.

I don’t know how accurate that is. I’m sure the state you’re operating in has jurisdiction, and those laws probably apply. In Virginia, no recaps at all, ever, unless the tire is commercial and says regroovable, and the tire is ID as recapped. Commercial truck tires are, and would be.

I don’t think a commercial tire exists that’s smaller than 19.5.

Do you have a link to that? The screen shot doesn't say enough to have any context to the law.

I've also looked thru NYS laws and so far cannot find anything prohibiting retreads on a steer axle. Not saying it's not there, just can't find it. Do you have a link?

I do know of commercial tires smaller than 19.5's that come in 17.5, 16, and 17" treads.. but they are not common, nor do I recall if they have regrooveable written on them.

I know the 19.5's I had were stamped with re-grooveable, and if re-grooved would be legal for steer axle use... which goes back to your original guarantee... it just isn't so.

EDIT: Found that verbiage in VA laws.... yes, any standard tire cannot be regrooved, but that's not your original statement. You guaranteed us that it was illegal for a regrooved tire to be on the steer axle, which is not true... even in VA laws. If the tire can be regrooved it can be ran on the steer axle if it's not a bus or over 4920 lbs/tire rated.

If we’re going to derail, let’s at least get back on track with accurate info.

Might want to recheck your laws.

They are illegal on the steers of busses, and not recommended for anything else with a rating per tire of 4920lbs or less. Not recommended does not make it illegal.

You’ll want to refresh with 49 CFR 393.75.

Maybe I’m seeing this wrong....

This is SOP around here for ages to have meandering threads among friends. No bickering BS. It's all good.

That doesn’t mean it’s right. We are taking this thread off the rails to the point we can’t reference it. It’s not searchable. So we are losing the information as soon as this thread goes cold. See what I mean?

Forums are here to help others. Information needs to be indexable and searchable. To let it go off the rails with no reference does nobody any good.

Well it seems that they’ve walked back recaps on the front. And it must have been recently. The regs I have at work call for a rejection, and I do still check. It’s been a dog’s life since I’ve seen a recap on a steer on any vehicle, and you really have to be insane to let it happen. Therefore, I haven’t needed to reject one.

I see what you are saying, but, with all respect, it's not going to change. I've been on here 15 or 16 years, and through all these meandering curves I have learned A TON, and made friends along the way. Ignore the few trolls who pop up now and again, and relax, this is a great forum.

It can. It all depends on the members and the staff. I started my forum stuff right here in the TDR almost 20 years ago. I owe a lot to a bunch of great people that frequented the forum back then. It was a lot different. I am relaxed and feel this is still a great place. It’s just needs some gentle nudging to keep it the best it can and will be.

Forums are still forums. This is still a great conversation especially since it’s staying respectful. It’s just unfortunate it’ll be lost.....

Did you special order this one? Anything you would reccomend different, or too soon to tell?

Friend got a Trackhawk a few months ago and they had a paint correction process done to that a few days after pickup, they found a ton of contamination during that process, its like a $90k vehicle, the folks who did it say the rail transport was most likely to blame, the process turns color when it responds to certain stuff.

They also did the ceramic coating, a bit pricey but they did it on a few vehicles and it really helps keep them nice.

Yes, I have spec'd out every truck I have owned. Too soon to really tell really. The Longhorn interior is excellent. The ride is better than I expected. Hoping for a reflash for the Aisin. I would prefer to have a hauler body for hitching up, but that's not the truck's fault.

Interesting. Conversely, I have never actually ordered one. I've always purchased off the lot or at the most, gave the dealer a list of must have items and a couple of colors to choose from, and they have brought them in from other dealers. My Ford was that way, the dealer found it in Maryland and brought it up the next day for me.

This is a iron remover for rail iron, brake dust etc.. It turns purple when dissolving contaminates.

FYI: If using a coating most manufacturers now make a vehicle soap to use on those coatings to keep them from deteriorating.
I still use a wax, less of a hassle and still protects.

My Sprinter is the 1st and last vehicle that I have had coated. It has been nothing but trouble. Over time, that coating turned chalky and white appearing. I brought it back to have them reapply the first few years. Now I've been working to just hand wax it to get the shine back. Terrible job on black paint.
