Late afternoon brain child idea of mine to remove a rusted on dually wheel.

Yes, we could have put the outer wheel back on, just "snugged" the lugs back up, jacked the truck up off the jack stands, set the truck down and drove around the block. But I figured if a puller can remove a crank pulley, and a hydraulic press can remove a bearing, then a bottle jack and a length of chain could remove a wheel. It worked, and we only had to release and re-seat the jack four times (worked around the rim). In hindsight, a second equal length of chain to attach to the other two holes in the rim at the same time would have made it easier.

EDIT - Note, that is not me in the picture, it is a local TDR member that I was helping do a LP relocation and install some air springs on his 99 3500.

That sure sounds like alot of work to remove a wheel. Neat idea. You are supose to have more flats to to keep the rims free of rust?

I would rather remove the rust and put on a liberal coat of anti seize or grease than repetitive flats. The kicker was that the wheels were off not too long ago getting new skins. The tire shop evidently resorted to a sledge hammer to beat it into submission. I used PB blaster and pulling force distributed around half the wheel at a time.

It's quite amazing how rusted wheels can get in a short time. Had a 02 Ford Super Duty at work Friday with 17,000 on the odometer I had to resort to similar tools of destruction to remove the rear wheels. Had a port-a-power between the inner and outer wheels, a helper with a 5 ft pry bar and still had to rattle the wheel with an air chisel to get to come off the hub. All that for a darn tire rotation that paid less then a half hour, so much for incentive last week.

Ain't it great working on stuff?

i'm a tile guy

ya bg, well well when your a tile guy kneepads are your best friend,i'd like to thank sticks for all of his GREAT HELP with my truck, the LP re-location went perfectly, even made the bracket baja proof ! thanks again sticks!!!

With my luck, the wheel would have popped loose and taken out the GoldWing sitting there!

I have a giant gear puller that works great for that (drums too), I got it at an auction for $20. 00... . no one could figure out what to use a puller that big for... sometimes I think too much to.

Yeah, I was eyeballing my largest puller as well, and it was short by 2 inches. I was more worried about personal injury than smacking the wing. As it was, we discovered the master padlock that was on the chain could not hold up to the pressure:eek:. At least the fact that Ray did not have a key for it is no longer an issue. :D

I am going to design an attachment with 4 chains on it to attach to each of the wheel holes just in case I encounter this on my truck.
