Brakin' My Chops...

I have a Horton fan clutch on my truck, and it has given me 3 years of flawless service. I think it's a great product, and I highly recommend it. That being said, here's my problem:
My Horton fan caught the nut on the bracket that comes down the back of the radiator. It didn't damage the wiring, just bent the bracket a bit. However, one fan blade is chewed up where it hit the nut on each rotation, and it's bent completely back like a taco shell. I bent it back some more with a prybar so the fan can freewheel without hitting that bracket so I can get to work and back.
I called Horton, and they told me to contact Cummins Northwest. I stopped and visited them, but they don't carry Horton products anymore. They told me to check at a Kenworth or Freightliner place.
I'm posting this to ask if anyone has had to replace their fan. Is it cheaper to get one from the Dodge dealer, direct from Horton, or from a heavy truck repair place?
Living up here, it's not yet warm enough to require the fan to be operational , as long as I don't have the a/c on when not moving. This includes not having the defroster on, which cycles the a/c. However, I need to get it fixed as soon as I can. I took the fuse out so it won't come on in the meantime.
One more question: what size wrench is required to loosen that big nut on the back of the clutch unit? I didn't install my fan, I had Jim Leonard do it, he's down in Riverside, Calif.
I believe the cause of this was the fan engaging right when I shut off the engine. I had the defroster on, and I had just parked the truck. The fan will cycle for a few seconds if the a/c is on and the truck is not moving. I believe the engine jumped around just enough to cause the fan to move forward and let a blade catch that nut. Clearance was pretty tight. I'm going to replace that nut (a nylon-insert locknut) with a pop-rivet, to increase clearance.
If any of you install a Horton fan, be sure to check the clearance between the fan and that bracket!
Andy

Andy,

I don't know what size that nut is but I can tell you how I removed the stock fan. I put a chain wrench on the fan hub and a small monkey wrench with a "cheater" pipe over the handle on the nut. While holding tension on the chain wrench, I struck the "cheater" pipe with a heavy rubber hammer. The nut came loose the first try. I might have been lucky, but it's worth a try. One thought #ad
--- the nut is a left-hand thread!

My fan bearing died, along with the housing. I cut it off and installed an electric fan. Works as well as the original, but I'll probably replace it with two side-by-side units as soon as I add the intercooler.

Andy, I believe the nut requires a 27mm wrench for removal. Snap-On sells a wrench made specifically for the the removal of the fan nut (as do others).

Thanks for the help, guys. The fan is on order from Scheid. Now I just need to keep an eye out for a Snap-On truck. I guess that's the sign of being a grown man: when I was a kid, I was keeping an eye out for the ice cream truck... now it's the Snap-On truck! Maybe these Snap-On dealers ought to put loudspeakers on their trucks and play music. Then all the mechanics can drop what they're doing and run out of the shop yelling, "YAY!!! THE SNAP-ON MAN!! THE SNAP-ON MAN!!"

Hi Andy, The same thing happened to me back in october. 1998. 5 Green 2500 with the Pro-Zap bumper. You may remember me from the show. Went 4 wheeling back in october soon after installing the fan. Fan caught the bracket, pulled the bracket through some of the radiator destroying the fan blades and the radiator. This was 200 Miles from where I live- Local dodge dealer repair about 1,150$. Took two weeks. Back then dodge was not friendly with horton and had to buy the fan from a horton dealer. An expensive nightmare. I still do not like the tight clearance between the fan and the wiring bracket. Sorry I do not have more technical info- the truck had to be trusted to a local dealer to do the repair.

Hey Andy, I also saw the fan nut wrench for sale at my local NAPA store the other day for... gulp!, $51. I don't believe the Snap-On wrench was quite as expensive though.

Followed a Snapon to breakfast this morn and asked the price for a 27mm wrench - READY?????? 70$!!!!

Sidebar - there were 7 Snapon trucks there and I set off ALL the alarms @ idle!!! Serves them right for the wrench price!!!!

Andy, I caught the Snap-On man at The PowerShop yesterday. The SPECIAL Cummins fan nut wrench is $49. 90 This not a standard 27mm wrench (which would probably be too "thick" for the Horton fan clutch application.
