Does 2 plugs mean 06 motor?
Cause I have 3 plugs and all of them are plugged in so I would think it's the right harness.

3 plugs is a 03-05 harness, 2 plugs is a 06-07 CANBUS harness.

I’m just not sure that 03-05 harness can work on a 06 truck. Everything I know says it won’t, but there may be something I don’t know there. The wiring harness and truck integration are very different between 05 and 06.

If you don’t mind posting or PM’ing me the VIN I can at least positively identify what came in the truck.

So if it is a 06 canbus truck I need a harness and a motor. Or just valve cover tray with 2 plugs and 06 injectors .

05 and 06 will use the same injectors. The motor itself is also the same, basically... nothing different that will effect anything other than the valve cover/tray and injector connections. The rest of the sensors are all the same.

You would have to look at the wiring diagram to see if you can simply change out the injector harness portion of the engine harness (pin to pin) or if it would require an entire harness. I am pretty sure that it's all different thou, from the injector harness to the dash harness... you really should just source an entire 2006 wiring harness.

The ECM has to be from an 06 as well.

Thank you that is good information to know. I appreciate all your time and help.

The Injector Connectors that plug in the Valve Cover are part of the Engine Harness, Cummins #4931851. A new harness looks to run @ $1,200.

Jack PM’d me his VIN and the ESN from the engine in his truck. According to the FCACommunity.force.com website, his truck is a 2006 DODGE RAM 3500 LARAMIE QUAD CAB 4X4 48RE DRW. Engine build date is 11-3-05.

The engine he has came out of a 2005 DODGE RAM SLT 3500 QUAD CAB RWD 48RE SRW. Engine build date is 6-7-05.

Both trucks have the “C” engine code.

Hello again what does that mean both engines have a "c" engine code. Thanks jack

Same basic HO engine rated at 325/610. Physically they are the same engine, but electrically they are very different.

The proper way to use this engine would have been to swap the original wiring harness, ECM, and valve cover/tray.

So not the wrong engine for the swap, but the wrong wiring harness.

10-4 thank you for the information looks like I got to find a engine harness. The injector harness is pretty cheap new from what I seen 5.9 and 6.7 use the same one it looks like.

There is no injector harness for the 2006, it’s part of the engine harness. Are you referring to the valve cover gasket?

Sorry I'm new to this yes the valve cover gasket/harness . Do I need a complete engine harness or is there a injector harness that plugs into main harness? And does it have to be 06 model only or will later Years work . Is there a part number for this harness for 06. Thanks for any help I appreciate it.

You need the entire engine harness, like the one Ozy linked earlier. You will also need any truck side harness that may have been removed.

As I said, there is no injector harness. You'll need an engine harness and an ECM. The Cummins number for the harness was originally 3977190 and has been superseded to 4931851, BUT, it is only available from Mopar because it is unique to the Dodge trucks. I post the Cummins numbers in hopes that the harness will have it on a tag so you can ID it. This engine harness part number is unique to 2006 and 2007 5.9 models only. The 2007.5 with the 6.7 is different.

All right fellows. In PM's, I think I've explained to Jack what he's going to need and what he'll have to do. BUT, as you well know, I'm no expert on the CR engine, so I'd like y'all to see what I've told him and correct me if I've told him wrong.

He MUST use the Engine Harness and ECM for an '06-'07 5.9L. Because of this, he'll also have to swap the Valve Cover, Rocker Box, and Gaskets.

Parts he'll need:
  • 2006-2007 5.9L Engine Harness
  • 2006-2007 5.9L ECM
  • 5367847 VC Gasket
  • 2006-2016 (I haven't checked newer) Rocker Box and Gasket
  • 2006-2007 5.9L Valve Cover
Once these parts are in place, mechanically it should run and function properly. I would imagine he will need some ECM flashing and programming, too.

The VIN on the ECM will need to be updated to match the VIN in the BCM.

I realize the old stuff is gone, but I wonder if there is any way to track it down.

This is the ecm they are reprogramming to my vin# if they can't do it they should let me know I would think. I'm going to call tomorrow to make sure.
? If they can reprogram it to my vin shouldn't the rest of the computers recognize it just thinking out loud.

I found this and from what it looks like to me is all the ecm part numbers listed must be able to be programed to be a 06 ecu

Based on the build dates posted by @BigPapa that is the original 2006 ECM. It shouldn’t have to be reprogrammed.

Looks more like wiring is your main issue.
