I may have the opportunity to purchase a 93 W250 LE with a manual trans and it only has 85,000 miles on the clock.

I have not seen the truck yet, but the owner will not sell it for less than $11K. I checked NADA and KBB and the retail price for that truck is anywhere from $6200 - $8200.

Do you guys think $11K is a fair price if the truck if it as nice as the owner says it is?

My other choice is to put a manual trans in my truck, which will probably run $5K and my truck has just over 200,000, but she runs great.

What do you think?

Thanks,

despite what the "guides" say, something is only worth what someone else will pay for it. I prefer high mileage "trucks" since they have "experience" ;)

buying high dollar 1st gen trucks

If you bought one 6000. 00 that would most likely have about 225,000 miles on it by now. and if it also came complete with peeling paint and a fifth wheel or goose neck hitch in the bed... You would NOT be able to fix it up to be in as new condition for another 5000,00..... !!!!!! No way no how

If the truck has no hitch in the bed and the paint is in top condition with no peeling . I would say it is worth the 11K he wants for it . If it has peeling paint knock off 3K . If it has a hitch in the bed along with some ones Micky mouse trailer wiring job knock off another 2500. 00..... If the truck ever lived in the north east or mid north west walk away and go look some where else for a truck !!!!!! or knock off another 5k for being a rust bucket or soon to be one... Once a truck has been driven in salt it is just a matter of time! Kind of like lighting a fuse of a time bomb or the wick of a candle... .

If it has a getrag offer to change the oil for him and see if there is any shiny sparkles in the oil or if it has a strong bronze color to it... If it does knock off 2k for that... ... good luck ..... If you are anywhere close to me I would be glad to look at the truck for you if you like ... Just pm me

PS: Bare in mind that KBB is based on an adverage considering the age ...

so "excellent condition" means "adverage excellent condition" for its age. Not the best one left in the country... For 11k the one you are looking at should be dam near the best one left in the country...

I agree with Mysteryman except for one point. Most trucks that have a Fifthwheel hitch and is in otherwise clean condition is in my opinion worth as much if not more than one with no hitch. RV'ers are well known to keep their vehicles in top knotch condition at all times to prevent problems on the road and most have a lot of pride in their vehicles. I do agree that gooseneck hitches usually mean abuse and hard work. Yes if it is clean and nice then it is worth what they are asking. Check out this jewel

I feel it's worth whatever it's worth to you. If you "think" it's worth 11,000 then that is entirely up to you. If you want it that is. If you do not want it that bad, then pick it apart and offer much less. Personally... ... ... ... . I'd be pretty darn upset if some guy began to pick apart a rig I have had painted and reworked the diff. /trans/engine etc. etc.

Think about what you can fix and what you cannot. If you cannot repaint it yourself, then it's worth less. If it has a leaky head gasket and you'd love to upgrade that portion of said engine, then it's not an issue.

I'll pay whatever I want to pay for a rig. You should do the same.

Good grief, are there any bolt-on accessories not on that truck? :-laf

I've found that KBB/NADA prices don't mean squat when it comes to CTDs - they hold their value extremely well. ;) When I was looking for my truck, I checked out countless CTDs in the $8k-10k range - well over the "book value," but nearly every one had tons of miles and were just plain junk. I paid $10k for mine with 47k original miles from the original owner, and it was worth every cent. :)

Personally, if I see a gooseneck hitch I pass right on by. 5th wheel hitches don't concern me as much, and as long as the truck wasn't towing a triple-slide 5'er I'd consider buying, but I would definately check things out very well (especially the transmission, rear end, and brakes).

Without seeing the truck it's impossible to know if it's worth $11k, but if it is in as good of condition as the seller says, and the mileage is true and correct, I wouldn't hesitate to pay that. :)

Gentlemen - I appreciate all of your responses and found them to be insightful.

Mysteryman - Thank you for the offer and I hope you both enjoy your road trip.

Hopefully, I will get to take a look at the truck this Saturday, so I will post an update Saturday evening.

Would the $11k truck be an addition or a replacement? i don't know how clean your truck is but you've already done some mods to it and you know how dependable it is, the truck you buy for 11k could still use the same upgrades your old one has so you have to take that in consideration. Are you satisfied with your truck other than the transmission? Your truck, paid for + transmission($5k) = $5k, new truck ($11k) + transmission($5k) = $16,000 without other mods. Just a different view taking into consideration the personal time, investment and satisfaction of the truck you currently own.

Well - I guess the guy already sold the truck or changed his mind. So it is back to converting my current truck to a manual transmission. I have a line on a 29 spline NP205 with only 70K miles and I already have the clutch/brake pedal assy and clutch release lever(fork). All I need to do now is line up a 5 speed manual transmission. I am on the fence between a g360 and a NVG4500.

Thanks again for your input.
