It could be:
1) Plugged (or bad) fuel filter.
2) Bad fuel.
3) Low fuel pressure from:
a) Bad lift pump.
b) Bad overflow valve.
4) Worn or damaged injector pump.
5) Deteriorated fuel line allowing air to get into the fuel going to the injector pump.
I'd start by checking the fuel pressure to the injector pump. If it's low, and assuming the filter is not the problem, inspect the hoses (the stock ones die after a few years).
Next suspect would be the bypass valve. Check it by crimping the return line and see if the pressure goes up. If you still have low pressure, the lift pump (or the filter screen on the bottom of the fuel heater) are the problem. (One member did have the screen in the fuel tank get plugged so there is something else to check).
If he eliminates all those possibilities and still has problems, I'd suspect the pump.
Tell your friend that if he was a faithful TDR member that he wouldn't have to bug you to find this out for him. AND, if he hung out here, he would probably already have a pretty good handle on it. Hey, he knew enough to try to diagnose it by cracking the lines...
