I need to change my ignition switch. I need to know how to go about keeping the new ignition switch keyed to match the existing door lock on the driver door. Can some of you that have changed your ignition switches in the past chime in?

Bob,

Ok. So how do you separate the key cylinder from the ignition switch? Is this something I can do myself or is it best a dealer swap?

Switch, I think. I am hunting an electrical grimlin that causes my A/C blower to work intermittently (replaced everything in the circuit except for ignition switch and blower motor and I still have the gremlin). In the thread I started on that, someone said they had replaced the ignition switch and solved the problem. I thought at that time that it was all one unit like in old vehicles... that is what I get for thinking.

Pull the shrouds off the column for access, you will then see the switch on the left side of the column, half dozen screws to gain access, and pull switch out. Once you see it it will all make sense

Bob have you changed one on these trucks before? I have looked at the service manual for the process and it is kind of lengthy and a bit intimmidating to me. I have a couple of questions about the process:

1) Do I need to remove the lock cylinder as stated in the service manual? I know the lock cylinder and ignition switch connect, but does the cylinder lock need to come out?

2) Is disconnecting the negative battery cables sufficient to prevent accidental airbag deployment? In the service manual, it says that you need to actually open up the steering wheel and disconnect the electronic control of the airbag in there.

The key cylinder does not have to be removed and disconnecting the batt cables and waiting 2 minutes will make the airbags a non issue

How ever I doubt the ign switch is the reason for a blower motor problem on an 05

Thanks Bob. I did not think the ignition switch would be the issue either, but I have replaced everything in the circuit except the ignition switch and the blower motor. The blower motor is next if the ignition switch does not get it done.

My money would be on the blower motor,I have had to replace quite a few. The ignition switch very rarely fails with the 05's

Not to stir the pot buttt... . i have a similar problem..... i turn the key off and with the fan on if you dont get the switch quite right the fan comes on..... no radio or anything else... . so is it a major project to replace just the switch????
