... ended up breaking the long bolt that holds the alternater bracket to the block. Darn thing was so full of rust that even after it broke it was stubborn as a mule comin' out. Since it was Labor Day Sunday evening I had to improvise by putting a 5/16" x 4. 25" grade 5 bolt in place of the metric one after grinding off the nut on the back side of the bracket. Back on the road but did notice that my belt tensioner is running halfway off the belt. Where is best (read that best quality at cheapest price!) place to buy this contraption? Do you have to replace just the innards part or the whole thing?

BTW, John Strenkowskis' jig is really slick! Thanks John!!!

Trent,

Cummins is probably the best bang for your buck when it comes to buying a new tensioner. Sorry, don't have the part number handy.

Tensioner

Dude, just installed one. I use all Cummins parts for the truck and school busses. Don't know if the aftermarket guys have these. The part no. for my '92 is 3935819. My cost was $129. 00

Mine was beginning to "lean" and when this occurs on the powerstroke the belt runs off. This is after 40K miles for the 7. 3L The 5. 9 has 174K and just pulled the original. Goes to show the engineering and quality components used in the manufacturing of the 5. 9 :)

The down side to all this? The newer 5. 9 tensioner costs only $68. 00:mad:

Got it replaced...

... but Cummins was too high @ $119. 00 and wasn't in stock either. Napa doesn't carry it but Auto Zone does for $50. 95 and it is a Dayco which is same brand I took off and looked like it had original engine paint on it!!! The only difference was the new one has a 1/2" sq dr instead of 3/8" sq dr on old one. Much easier to get leverage with a longer ratchet!
