With the kind of work that I do, I have learned to rely on a hobbs hr. meter rather than odometer. Dozers, loaders, scrapers and such don't have odometers. Engine Hr. Meters are what we use to keep track of services/oil changes. 150-200 hrs is the average between oil changes and pulling a sample. Most of our Dodge trucks have engine hr. meters mounted somewhere. 200 hrs. (about 12000 miles) should work on a Cummins.

Roll_Over, did you know the 03's and I guess the 04's have an engine hour meter feature? For someone who does not drive very much that is an excellant idea to use the hour meter rather than the odometer to change the oil!Oo.

Ok DPKetchum, this is the third time I've seen ya post it, and three strikes you're out. It's CUMMINS, not cumminGs!!!!!!! There is no G. No excuses for an owner to make that mistake!!!!:-laf

just went from hagerstown, md to state college, pa to mansfield, pa to lewisburg, pa and back to hagerstown, md. Round trip was 440 miles, i made it without filling up and got 14. 3 mpg going the speed limit or a little over. gvw was about 16,000 lbs pulling the 9,000 lb enclosed trailer. I think that is terrific mileage considering most of the trip was up and down hills and some state road travel mixed in with mostly interstate.

gary :D

My case was this, with my ETH 02:

Changed factory oil to Rotella @500 miles

Changed Rotella to Delo @4200 miles

Changed Delo To Redline Full Syn @ 9K

I hadn't towed at all in the first 9K. Now have 19K on engine. Still have same Redline in the pan-- no detectable consumption. It doesn't appear to have burned a single drop.

The difference in cold weather starting with the Redline was amazing-- it's very quiet at startup, and oil pressure comes up WAY faster.

I am going with the PB extreme next change, just to try it out. Not as good as Redline, I think, but it's also not $30 a gallon like the Redline either:eek:

Justin

Hohn, the PB extreme isn't a real synthetic, its a group 3, made from petroleum basestocks, not nearly as good as your redline. . If you're looking for a little more value but still great oil, get the amsoil 15w-40 HDD/marine. It can be had for $16-$18/gallon and is a full Group IV synthetic. Delvac 1 is also a premium group IV, is 5w-40 and comes out to be around $22-$25/gal shipped.

Lightman,

In a TDI, Amsoil users are less likey to top off than Delvac users from the information I've seen. That's been my own personal experience. I changed the factory fill oil at 5Kmi and put 120Kmi on it before selling...

This is the longest thread I have seen since I have been with the TDR.

We have a 1989 12 valve CTD that has almost 400,000 miles on it. It has had three overheads and two fuel pumps (one warranty) two starters and a set of new injectors. That is it, and we have put Delo 400 15-40 in it from the start every 5,000 miles. The truck is used for construction every day. It has no tail gate or any straight sheet metal to it's name. Not to bad for old fashion dino oil.

Well I mean just think how long it would lasts with AMSXX and has far as straight body panals all it needed was a monthly WAX with AMSXXX special space age moduler wax:p

So for the total newbie like me. My 1st Cummins truck.

I have read about several oils... Amsoil, Delvac, Premium Blue, Delo, Dino, and Synthetic.....

Read the entire thread and still don't know what to do.

I have 4,000 miles on my 2004 HO Engine.

I guess I am not putting synthetic in it until 15k. I think I am using 15W40 in it. Doing the first change at 5,000 miles.

Don't have a clue which oils are syn or not but am gonna research it.

Can we get some of the terms cleared up... Like what is DINO?? A brand or just a nick name for Oil (non syn. )

I live in Michigan where the schedules can go both ways. I do a lot of highway driving empty for work. Average about 30k per year in milage. Only about 5k -8k of haulin. Usually about 10,000lbs on the loads. Temps range in MI per day... gotta love this state.

So can I get a FINAL answer for my 5K oil change on the name(oil), weight(oil), and filter name.

Thanks to all. New to the site but love all the tech info.

And never even thought about TESTING my oil to see what is in it... Where or how do you get that done?? ;)

Sorry for the 3 posts.

I hit the SUBMIT button several times in my 5 minute wait to get it to post that message.

SEE NEWBIE :D

both Dodge and Cummins use 15W-40 Valvoline diesel oil and fleetguard filters. Cummins tells you not use a synthetic until after 20000 miles and then they only recomend Valvoline blue by name. They told me it was because that was the only synthetic they tested.

Lightman,

As I recall, the NOACK of Delvac 1 is now 13% and the NOACK of Amsoil products are now between 6-7% (recent reforumlations). I've read of several TDI owners that noticed increased oil consumption with Delvac over Amsoil products, and I share this experience. What I'm saying: Had you tried an Amsoil product, you MAY have noticed decreased oil consumption despite changing the oil at 424 miles. That's all I'm saying.

I'm not in bed with any Mobil distributors or Amsoil distributors. I currently use Delvac 1 5w-40 in my '87 300D and Chevron Delo Syn 5w-40 in my Dodge Cummins. When I finish off the Delvac I have on the shelf, I'm going to try Amsoil 15w-40 in my 300D and see how it changes oil consumption. I may start putting it in everything. There is less than a dollar difference per gallon for me. The Delvac and Chevron jugs allow for easier pouring.
